Confused by smear and colposcopy - hysterectomy possible?

Hello lovely people

Bit of background 2005 had CIN2 found in a smear. Had them removed by loop without biopsy all fine no drama. Forward to now... this year I  tested positive for HPV for the 3rd year ina row. The first year I tested positive was the first year I was tested for HPV so who knows how long I have had it. My smear in Feb was completely clear but referred to colposcopy due to HPV. I was totally blown away when results came back CIN3 from biopsy taken in March. I am due back for another loop removal in a few days. Additional info I have an immunity surpressing condition. Anyone else had clear smear and nasty biopsy? I've also read that posibility of hysterectomy suggested if you can't clear HPV and had two or more CIN 2/3 and had all children you want. Has anyone gone through this? I feel so lost as never expected the biopsy to show precancer I thought it was more to assess was HPV I had? Thank you so much for any info or help anyone has xx Anne xx

  • Hello anneh656,

Thank you for sharing your story and explaining the background of what happened to us. I am sorry to hear you have tested positive for HPV for the third year in a row and that your results came back CIN3. Try not to worry too much though as the treatment will be effective in dealing with these abnormal cells. You can read more about this in our page on treatment if you have abnormal cells

Given your particular situation and circumstances, it's best not to look too much information online as it may be confusing and misleading and make you even more worried so it's perhaps best to give your GP a call and ask them to answer all these questions that are playing on your mind at the moment, for example what you have read about the possibility of hysterectomy.

Feel free also to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you would like to talk things through with them. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I also hope that you will hear from other forum members who have gone through this before and that they will come and share their experience with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that it all gets sorted swiftly and easily!

    Best wishes,
