Breast lump, swelling and pain… help?

Hello,

I am writing this because I feel I need some advice on what I should do next.

4 weeks ago I found a lump in my left breast, it was just before my period and so I thought it was hormone related. My period came and went and my left breast still had a rather large lump, alongside being swollen, tender, experiencing shooting pains and being visibly about a quarter of the size bigger than my right breast.

I took myself to the doctors and had two doctors examine me, both confirmed they could feel the lump and referred me 'urgently' to the breast clinic.

16 days later, I attended the breast clinic. I had an examination by a nurse who confirmed she felt the lump and marked the area for an ultra sound. The scanographer took about 10 minutes before finding the lump and asking if I have any family history of breast cancer, which was stressful and once found the lump quickly come to the conclusion that lumps and pain are normal. I questioned this as I explained I currently cannot take off my bra without being in sever pain and discomfort. She said it'll calm down when your around 30 and then full disappear when I'm 50, I'm currently 25.

After making it very clear how much discomfort I am in, she said it could be inflamed but she can't tell this and I'll need to call my GP for antibiotics and sent me home.

I called my GP immediately and explained what had happened, explaining I feel no reassurance, I didn't see a doctor and don't actually know what is wrong with my breast and was advised I may need antibiotics. My GP then called the hospital who explained I have breast tissue thickening (this wasn't explained to me) and said I need to try to take evening primrose oil.

I feel extremely upset, dismissed and today when showering nearly passed out because of the discomfort of my breast. Am I being dramatic? Is this normal? Should I request a 2nd opinion?

  • Hi, I'm sorry for what you are going through and can understand that you are upset and worried about your symptoms. When I found a lump and went to the breast clinic, the radiographer told me there and then that the lump looked suspicious and she took a biopsy. It turned out to be breast cancer. In your case, it sounds as if the radiographer couldn't see anything to worry about. But if you are really concerned, speak to your GP again. I hope everything turns out well for you. Do come back here if you are worried; we're all here to help in any way we can. Amy x
