Will ultrasound always detect lymphoma? (Hodgkins and Non?)

Since December I've had various symptoms starting with chest pain then lower back pain to the extent that I couldn't really get out and about. I then developed generalised lymphodenopathy, they're all over my body, neck, groin, even in my elbows!   I'm a 22 YO male, otherwise fit and healthy, a bit underweight 7 stone 3lbs, I have always been around a constant 8 stone no matter what I eat so that's slight weight loss.  These symptoms of pain disappeared after around a month. Then I had a horrid headache for literally about a month straight, no relief even after waking up in the morning, it was constant.  I took painkillers every day.  Then then subsided and I developed 2 types of rash (red, spotty, but flat, across my body, not so much my legs or face.

None of my symptoms now are really painful, only when new lumps appear I get a kind of pulled muscle feeling, and it's only for a few days, then the pain leaves.

The lymph nodes are still 5 months later and rashes still present.  I was referred to ENT for a biopsy but they only done an ultrasound and said my nodes look reactive.  I didn't have a set appointment and my GP had asked ENT to squeeze me inbetween patients.  It was awful they just wanted me out as they were missing lunch.  The consultant used a camera down my nose but I was extremely uncomfortable and he didn't even give me a minute to recover and went for the next nostril, no time no compassion and I'm worried they rushed and missed something... no time for questions and he had me out the consultation room in front of other patients whilst I was trying to ask a question.

I've had extensive bloods done well before todays ultrasound and they were generally ok, although really low iron, folate and high B12.

It was a biopsy I was referred for but they didn't have time, they initially told me I'll need another appointment, but they managed ultrasound and said biopsy not needed.  I'm worried because I have seen online that Hodgkin's lymphoma might be missed in both ultrasounds and blood work.  That's it's hard differentiate between reactive nodes and lymphoma.  Is this true?

Im not itchy, or sweating through bedding at night, but I have most other symptoms but no infection...

Can anyone with a diagnosis relate to this story?
I waited so long for this appointment only to be told it must be an infection when bloods say no infection!!

I seem to have my GP stumped and at 5/6 months the visable symptoms haven't gone away.

Thanks and I wish everyone the best :)

  • Hello ConfusedChappy

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing health problems over the past months and that despite numerous tests and an appointment with the specialist you're no further forward with a diagnosis. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious and concerned.

It sounds from your post as if your GP has been supportive in trying to get to the bottom of the symptoms that you're dealing with and I encourage you to keep in touch with them as they will be best placed to arrange any other tests or referrals or treatment that may be appropriate.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm, excluding bank holidays.

I do hope that things begin to improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi did you manage to get a diagnosis? My husband is currently going through the same at the moment.  It’s been more than a year now and he still has lymphadenopathy
