Cancer with normal bloods?

Hi guys,

I've been struggling with a lot of symptoms lately and I'm getting worried. Originally I went to my GP with fatigue, weight loss, pain in upper left abdomen, getting colds and flus a lot and just feeling generally unwell. I had blood tests and had very low folate and vitamin D. I have been taking supplements for these for 4 months now but just not feeling any better, so I went back to the GP.

My GP said he had no idea what could be causing it and actually asked me what I thought it was. I felt a bit annoyed at this as I am not the doctor, so I don't know.

Over the weekend, I developed some unexplained bruising and some other stuff. I called 111 who asked me to go to A&E. The doctor in primary care did bloods and felt around my body and my bloods came back all normal. He did say though that he wasn't happy with my symptoms so has sent my GP a letter on my notes saying he would like for me to have an urgent 2 week referral. I feel a bit of relief because I feel as though I'm finally being listened to and thoroughly checked.

Since being in A&E, I am now really suffering with pains in my bones especially right in the middle of my chest and down my legs.

Is it possible for my bloods to be showing as normal for me but still have cancer? I have heard of others who have had multiple blood tests and it was only on the fifth that they came back abnormal.

  • Hello rj29

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with some ongoing health problems recently. It's understandable that you may be feeling worried and frustrated by the lack of answers about your symptoms.

Have you checked with your GP surgery to see if they have received the communication from the A&E Dr yet and if the referral has been made? Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the referral to the specialist and they will be able to give you some answers and reassurance.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk with one of our nurses about your concerns then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.

I d hope that thin start to settle and improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn!

My doctor has made a referral but it's to a gastroenterologist. I have suffered from stomach problems in the past so I'm happy to go and get everything checked out. However, I'm still getting random bruising popping up on my legs and don't know if seeing a gastroenterologist is going to help figure out what's causing that.

Unfortunately I had a bad experience with my GP and left the appointment in tears as I felt as though he wasn't listening to me or taking me seriously and kept talking over me the whole appointment. Hopefully I'll get some answers soon
