Urgent referral for ovarian cyst aged 22

Hi, I'm a 22 year old woman who's been presenting with extremely heavy, painful, debilitating periods for the past six years.  I've made attempt after attempt to get answers about what's wrong and was finally given a pelvic ultrasound in January of this year when the doctor found a cyst on my left ovary.  I was sent away for three months and earlier this month had another scan to see if it had gone away.  According to the doctor, it hadn't changed at all, so I would need to be referred to a gynaecologist.  I received a phone appointment from my GP to follow up on the scan a couple of weeks later but when they called me they said they hadn't seen it yet and that they'd call me back.  They didn't call me back and instead today I've received a letter telling me I've got a 2 week wait urgent referral to hospital.  I'm honestly really really freaked out.  I lost my mum to brain cancer when I was 19 so I am absolutely terrified of going through  this.  I know it's unlikely given my age but is it normal to be urgently referred for an ovarian cyst?

  • Hello Daisy

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been referred to a specialist following the discovery of a cyst on your ovary. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about this.

It's not uncommon for people to be referred on an urgent pathway for an ovarian cyst but the important thing to remember is that this doesn't automatically mean you have cancer. Your GP wants to get this issue looked at for you quickly and this is the easiest way for them to do that.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and the specialist will be able to give you some reassurance on the day. In the meantime if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (excluding bank holidays).

I do hope that things settle and improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks so much for replying.  Just a quick update, I managed to get a message to my GP yesterday asking for some more info & he replied saying he's referred me that way because otherwise it would've taken me 50+ weeks to see someone because of waiting lists.  This has eased my mind a little but it still spiked my anxiety seeing a confirmation of my appointment from the oncology department!  The GP receptionist said there's nothing to worry about and that she knows it must have frightened me getting the letter, so I do feel a bit better.  I've got a GP appointment next week and then the referral the week after that, so just got to hope everything's okay and gets sorted quickly.

  • Hi Daisy,

I'm in a similar situation at the moment. I'm 19, suffered with heavy painful periods for the last few years and in the last year or so, my pain became constant, on my period or not, so I went to my doctors which got me sent for an urgent ultrasound. Two days later and I was sent for blood tests which naturally made me panic. At my follow up appointment I was told I have a complex 5cm cyst on my right ovary. I'd just like to let you know that there is a very strong possibility that it isn't cancer. My blood tests came back within the normal range meaning I have no cancer cells, however, I've still been booked for an urgent gynaecology appointment at my local hospital. Urgent appointments can, thankfully, just mean that they'd like to get you out of pain and discomfort quickly and isn't always a direct link to cancer.

I can't tell you that it isn't cancer, because I'm not a doctor, nurse or have anything to do with having the knowledge or to tell you, but I'd like to reassure you where I can, that there are 100's of different things out there that can present themselves similarly to cancer, but aren't.

    Best wishes,

    Eva
