6 months ago I had a LLETZ procedure to remove CIN2 cells - There were slight complications during the procedure as the speculum came out midway through cauterization but the procedure was a success and I didn't really have any side effects apart from 7 weeks of bleeding post procedure. Today I went for my 'Test of Cure' (follow up smear test) at my doctor’s surgery and had a not particularly pleasant experience. Normally I don't have any pain or issues with smear tests (apart from light bleeding after) and I've had 5 smears in 6 years now so I'm almost a pro, but today was very different.
It took the nurse 4 attempts to do the procedure as I found the speculum part of the process very painful and uncomfortable whenever she tried to open it - It was a combination of extreme pressure coupled with a sharp pinching pain and it really felt like I was being ripped in two. No part of that procedure was comfortable and I literally had tears in my eyes and steamed up glasses despite having quite a high pain threshold! The nurse herself was lovely and experienced and she said on the last attempt she got a good view and couldn’t see what was causing the pain/discomfort as everything looked normal.
Even 9 hours later, I’m still getting small uncomfortable instances of pain/twinges every hour or so within that region (but no bleeding after the smear which is a first). I haven’t had sex in years and don’t usually get pain within that region except for a little acute twinging pains in my right side near my ovary every now and then but nothing to cause concern and that could also just be my IBS causing gas or something! Could this be a side effect of the LLETZ procedure or just an unlucky/uncomfortable day? Has anyone else had this?
I’m just concerned if I need another follow up or if I do engage in sexual activity, that there will be pain and discomfort. I’m reluctant to make an appointment especially if I’m overthinking this which I probably am!
Side note:
-I’m on the pill so don’t get periods at all.
-I haven’t had any sexual intercourse in years whilst I’ve been waiting to be HPV free.
