BIA - ALCL, waiting on tests

Hello All,

I went to see my surgeon last week as I had a pain in my left breast for around 2 weeks.  This happened around 2 months ago, I didn't go straight away as thought it was just one of those things and it went away.  It is now clearly swollen and I have been referred this week to a breast clinic.

I am hoping for some advice or thoughts really. I realise that I have had slight asymmetry for a couple of years now but again just thought that was normal with women, body changes etc... And as I said it was slight compared to the obvious size difference in my breasts now.

I am now feeling really stupid and very panicked over the whole thing.  If I do have ALCL have I left it to become worse and potentially spread for years because it didn't overly bother me that my breasts were slightly uneven? Or is the pain and obvious swelling early signs?

Does anybody know how long approximately a referral to a breast clinic might take or have any recommendations as to where I can get seen quickly if I pay to go privately (South East or London)?

Lastly, what other things could this end up being? A cyst or silicon leaking etc... ?

Sorry for all of the questions, it was a surprise to say the least.

  • Hi HFitz,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. The main thing is that you have now made a move to get them investigated. Waiting times vary throughout the country, but you should be contacted within 2 weeks from the date of referral. I assume that you have previously had implants when you suspect BIA-ALCL. How long ago did you have these done?

You will find the staff at the clinics very helpful and understanding. You would probably get a private appointment sooner - the best way to find out is to phone some of your local private hospitals. Unless you have insurance to cover any surgery and treatment required, you may find that you have a longer wait to get back into the NHS system, so bear this in mind when you are considering going private.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
