Cervical cancer (sorry if TMI)

So I am really panicking and would just like to know honestly if anyone experienced these symptoms when first diagnosed or any reassurance as to what else it could be! I'm aware I've only had sudden symptoms for around 2 weeks so I would imagine it's nothing too sinister but I would just appreciate some insight whilst waiting for an appointment!

I'm 25 and been on the contraceptive pill for nearly 10 years (I had a short break last year but been back on it for around 8-9 months so well settled again). I've never ever had any breakthrough bleeding, or any problems with periods, bleeding etc so this is all completely new to me. About 12/13 days ago I started having like a pinky/brown discharge (sorry) only really when I wiped, and that went on for a couple days- then it changed to brown constantly just a light spotting, and then had a few times of slightly heavier where I've needed to wear a pad, all very dark brown and just really random bleeding that hasn't stopped. Tonight I had a really mucousy brown when I wiped with a very small amount of like maybe a clot or tissue or something- only about 2cm in length but very dark. I did do a pregnancy test yesterday just in case and that was negative - as I'm not really feeling 100% myself, feel like my temperature is just not regular just all over the place (not recorded but just how I feel), been having some mild lower abdo pain only for the last 2 days, the worst thing is feeling nauseous and finally just feeling really lethargic.

I went to the GP today, only because I had an episode where I felt insanely dizzy and nauseous, went straight to the toilet and had a sudden heavy bleed which made me feel like I was going to faint. This was like a reddy/brown mixed with fluid kind of but a larger amount. The GP looked at my cervix and being a nurse myself- I knew that worried look she suddenly had, but trying to stay calm, she sort of said "oh okay yeah, so it looks like you have lots of old blood and there's some changes to your cervix", said it's probably ?ectropion..explained what that was, but the look on her face just looked concerned Ahhh! She's referred me to gynae for an urgent 2 week wait appointment but hasn't done any swabs/bloods or anything in the meantime so I have been up all night panickingggg! It's the most awful feeling I don't know how anyone does it and I'm in awe of every woman who goes through this too, it really is awful. I'm sure it's nothing and hopefully is just Ectropion but seriously my mind is all over the place. Any honest advice on symptoms/what I should do or anything specific I should fight for please let me know, or if you have Ectropion and sounds the same I'd love to stop panicking quite as much haha! I was very worried as saw that Ectropion is usually very light spotting and I wouldn't really say that's what I've had, and not sure what that would have been triggered by.

Another side note- I did have my first smear back in December which came back clear but obviously I know that doesn't mean everything, but did reassure me until I went to bed and just started the emotional panic haha! Thanks in advance for any help, so appreciated!

  • Hello kwills

I'm sorry you've had some ongoing health problems recently. It's good to hear that you've already seen your GP and that they have referred you to see the specialist.

Cervical ectropion is a common condition, especially in young women taking oral combined contraceptives. You might find it helpful to read through this leaflet produced by the NHS.

It sounds reassuring to hear that you're up to date with your cervical screening and that the most recent test results, just a few months ago, didn't give any cause for concern.

We know that for many people this period of waiting for appointments can be worrying. If you think it may help to chat things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information, advice, and support they can.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and the specialists will be able to give you some reassurance when you see them.

    Best wishes,
