Incidental finding of abnormal breast tissue.

Hi Im 48 and Yesterday I went to the breast clinic to have a couple of dimples checked out.  1 week previous I saw my gp who said she couldnt see or feel anything too obvious but reffered anyway.  So lucky to have been seen reffered and had a biopsy within a week.  Thank god for our NHS.

Arrived at breast clinic where I saw a surgeon who said my GP had felt a 1.5 cm lump.  I wasnt aware of this at all so was shocked to hear this.  Anyhow I had a mammogram followed by an ultrasound.  3 small cysts were found in the breast I was worried about and Within seconds of placing the ultrasound on my breast I wasnt worried about the radiologist spoke to the nurse in the room and there I was having 2 core biopsies done.  Radiologist said its just to confirm that its a fibroadenoma.

(I had a very large and strange looking one removed 19 years ago so I was already aware of what these are.)

I went back in to see the surgeon who drew on paper what he called an incidental finding of abnormal tissue below my nipple under the breast.  Told me biopsy would go to be checked then would have to wait for the next available MDT before I hear anything and he said this could be 1-3 weeks to decide what to do with the tissue.

I think I was in a bit of shock so nodded politley, thanked him and off I went.  Today im starting to slightly freak out and im kicking myself for not asking why the radiologist said it was a fibroadenoma then he never mentioned it but said the biopsy was for the  abnormal tissue found.  

Should the radiologist have told me it was a fibroadenoma, it she was so certain about it from the U/S why the biopsy?

 Any advice or any experiences negative or positive are welcomed.

    Hi, sorry that you are going through this worrying time, not knowing what the lump might be. It sounds to me like they can't tell for certain from the scans so they have taken the tissue samples to rule out anything suspicious. 8 out of 10 lumps turn out to be something other than cancer. And 1-3 weeks sounds about right as some units are very busy, as are the pathology labs. Try to keep busy and distracted, going for walks will help, and you can always call the unit if you want to try and get more answers. I hope everything turns out well for you. Take care, Amy x

    Hi Jozza,

    A very warm welcome to our forum.

    Many of us are so shocked when anything abnormal is found, that we often forget to ask any of the questions that we think of later on. If the last fibroadenoma was large and strange looking, the chances are that this one is the same. Perhaps this is why they decided to carry out the biopsies?

    Most radiologists don't tell patient's anything about their results and it is left to the consultant to give you a diagnosis after the MDT meeting. Occasionally, they may say something if something like a  benign fibroadenoma, or cyst, is found, as this saves patient's thinking the worst for the 1-3 weeks wait to see the consultant again. It sounds as if all looked straightforward with you until the 'abnormal tissue' was noticed.

    I sincerely hope that this is just another strange looking fibroadenoma. I am sure that this will be an anxious wait for you until you get your biopsy results.

    Thank you. 

    I feel slightly better today, resigning to the fact no amount of worrying will change the outcome. 

    Keeping myself busy at work and watching rubbish on netflix.

    Yes I think Im more shocked that the breast I wasnt worried about has something abnormal in it.  

    Fingers crossed its an abnormal fibroadenoma.

    I will keep you posted.

    Hi Jozza,

    Your post about watching rubbish on Netflix made me laugh. I'm also waiting for results and am switching between watching Netflix (I'm finding the foreign language dramas are good as I need to focus on the subtitles!), randomly pacing between my lounge and kitchen, and coming back on here in the hope of finding someone to chat to, lol.

    I could hardly eat a thing when waiting for my first biopsy results, but this time it's the other way around and I can't stop eating! So actually it should be Netflix, eating, pacing, eating, forum, eating...repeat, lol.

    I really hope it all goes well for you and you get your results soon, finger's crossed that all this worry is for nothing.

    Hi Jozza,

    I found a larger abnormal lump in my other breast 6 months after I had the lumpectomy.  Although my surgeon, felt that this was cancer, when he examined me, I was fortunate that the biopsy proved otherwise.

    Here's hoping and praying that you will have the same experience.
