Diagnostic mammogram

Hi! I'm just wondering if anyone else has been through anything similar -

my mom found a lump on her breast, size of a pea ( haven't actually saw the lump myself ) got herself a private appointment for mammogram. Dr said he didn't seem worried but once she had mammogram & another test ( not sure what that was ) he said it has unusual characteristics but it's so tiny he can't properly see it on the scan. They've referred her to have a diagnostic mammogram. It's been a week nearly and heard nothing for when this appointment will be. Oh and she also has a routine mammogram last October and this came back all clear?!

has anyone else had to go through this? What is a diagnostic mammogram & what could unsual characteristics mean... it doesn't sound great to me and as you can imagine being her daughter I'm very worried!

  • Hello Jess-

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum recently found a breast lump and that following an appointment with the specialist they now want to do some further imaging. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about this.

A diagnostic mammogram will look at the breast in more detail and will take some further images that will hopefully help the Consultant to make a diagnosis about this lump.

If your Mum is concerned about how long she may have to wait for the next appointment then there's no harm in her giving the Consultant's secretary a call and asking about waiting times. Hopefully, it won't be too long.

We know that waiting for tests and appointment can be an anxious time. Sometimes it can help to chat with someone about how you're feeling. If you, or your MUm, would like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope that your Mum has some positive news soon.

    Best wishes,
