I don't think many consultants give any details by telephone it's normally a appointment, it doesn't mean it's bad news they may need to explain details further .

my diagnosis was given at a face to face appointment.

I've seen people get good and bad results from being called in so you can't really say for certain what it will be ,the bit that stands out to me is when you say he has to see the oral surgeon again maybe its just face to face advice that is easier explained in person rather than on the phone as sometimes you miss things when you talk on the phone I wish your Dad all the best for Tuesday .

My name is Paul, 63 Yr old male, just undergone a low anterior resection, for the removal of a mid rectal cancerous tumour. I can tell you they take a biopsy, culture it, pathologist examines it. He sends in a report to the surgeon, who then will discuss it at a multi disciplinary team meeting. Then you will be invited by letter formally ( sometime preceeded by a phone call), to attend the hospital to see a surgeon and a cancer nurse. 3 weeks is about right for this to happen. They will not tell you by phone. There will be issues to discuss  and questions you will want to ask, face to face. I asked for my results over the phone, they refused, cannot identify you by a phone call. The timing and protocol is correct.

Thank you for this! I've heard of some people receiving a letter with an appointment but being told to bring somebody with them etc, but my dads never said this.

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I hope everything went well with the operation. 
 

Your explanation was very thorough, I was just under the impression that if they knew there was cancer they would want to get you in and treatment to be started as soon as possible, I didn't realise they'd wait a further three-four weeks to get you in to tell you!

Hi Ellie, thanks for getting back.

It's a bit of a long process getting all the information, liasing with other team members, discussing the results, the options and recommending a course of treatment.  Nothing is quick on this topic. Not knowing what's going on is the worse part. If you can get the tel no of the colorectal nurses, they are the best people to speak to for updates and procedure. Very knowledgeable and helpful.

I'm not certain so I wouldn't like to say but at this moment in time he hasn't been diagnosed with anything so just hang on to that if you are going with your dad it might be a good idea to write some of the important things down as you'll probably forget once you get out of there don't be afraid to ask questions if there's something you don't understand I've heard say it was a good idea ,not long now and I'm sure you'll feel better once the waiting is over Best Wishes for Tuesday I hope things go well x
