At home bowel FOB tests

I'm 43, female, and I've been having weird bowel symptoms for a while, swaying between constipation, the runs, heavy feeling all the time in my bowels, mucus, tender areas on stomach, distension, liver/gallbladder pain for about 6 months now.  I don't like bothering the gp as know how pressed they are so I spotted the home bowel tests in tescos and low and behold it's positive.  I bought some additional ones online just to make sure it wasn't a dodgy test and all positive, on different days. Any idea how accurate they are and what next steps might be? I've got an appointment for late next week and scared to death. We have bowel cancer on both sides of my family.

  • Hi FiScot,

It's good to hear that you now have an appointment in place. The tests can't give any explanations so it will only be your doctor who can advise on this. If they feel further tests are required then they may suggest that or book a referral, depending on what they think.

I appreciate the uncertainty will be difficult - try to keep busy prior to your appointment to help with distraction from any worries.

    Wishing you all the best,
