Suspected lower GI cancer - how to take my mind off it?

As suggested in the title, I've been urgently referred to see colorectal team for endoscopy and colonoscopy following blood tests showing iron deficiency anaemia along with some other symptoms.

I know there's no point in being anxious and worrying before I know anything, and it's likely that everything is fine and they just have to make sure it's NOT cancer, but seeing "suspected lower GI cancer" in my notes sort of freaked me out.

How can I occupy myself during the waiting period? Trying to do my favourite hobbies but still can't stop thinking about it.

Thanks ️

  • Hello Demon_Eel94

I'm sorry to hear that you're currently waiting for some further investigations of a few health problems that you've had recently. We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult and it's natural that you may be feeling anxious about the possible diagnoses.

Keeping busy is definitely a good way to manage the waiting and that can be through activities such as your favorite hobbies, meeting friends, getting outside in the fresh air, or tackling that ever-growing list of "jobs to do" that we all seem to have. Try to avoid searching online for possible answers as we know that this often leaves people feeling more unsettled and concerned.

It sounds like you have a positive mindset about things and this certainly helps. I know that many of our members have found it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses whilst they're waiting for an appointment. The nurses are always happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about any questions you may want to raise with the specialist at your appointment. If you think this might be helpful for you you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
