Under 30, so won't do a biopsy?!

From the beginning, 2019 (age 24) found a small lump left breast close to my nipple. I got referred to the breast clinic where they done a scan on the breast and said it looks like a Fibroadenoma.

Around 3 weeks ago I started getting shoulder pain in the left which went under my armpit and left breast (lump still there). I went back to the gp and then with me pushing I got referred to the breast clinic.

When at the breast clinic, they felt it and said feels like a Fibroadenoma and sent me off for a scan. From the scan they said they think it is that but would like to do a biopsy on it just to be sure. As they was getting the equipment ready for the biopsy another person in the room said she's not 30, it's changed to 30 years now or be over 3cm big. So they didn't do the biopsy because of my age (28). What makes me worried is why did they want to do a biopsy in the first place and why has the pain not gone after all these weeks?!?

I'm thinking to go back to the gp demanding a biopsy but if I don't meet the criteria what can be done?

  • Hi, sorry I'm not much help but I found a lump a year ago when I was 29. The GP said she wasn't worried as I was under 30 and to go back if it grows. A year later I'm now 30 and I noticed it's grown quite a bit now. I feel like some drs don't take you seriously when you are young and you have to push harder to be taken seriously.

I'm not sure what can be done, hopefully someone on here can help you but I would ask for another opinion?

Keep us updated with how you get on

    Sophie xx

  • Thanks for replying to my post. They definitely don't take younger girls serious and always fob them off guessing it's hormonal. I'm going to push for a biopsy for peace of mind as I'm still not happy about the outcome.

My cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34 but again she was told by gp the lump feels like nothing to worry about and to come back in a few weeks time to check if it's still the same. She pushed for a scan and unfortunately it was breast cancer.

I also follow a girl on Instagram whose was 25 when she found a lump and even after having a scan they still said it looks hormonal. After having a biopsy that's when it revealed breast cancer.

I don't understand why they cant just biopsy any lump on any age women as scans don't always tell you what it is.

Please go and get your lump checked out again if your saying its got larger ️

  • Hi, I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin, is she ok now?

I am at my breast clinic appointment tomorrow morning for this lump as I went back to a different GP a few weeks ago and she referred me straight away. She said she thinks it's just a cyst so hopefully that's all it is. What worries me though is if it is the worst case, that this lump has been there for a year.

I really wish they would take younger women seriously. They always say cancer can happen at any age, but fob you off when you go to them with concerns.

Definitely push for a biopsy to put your mind at ease or you will always have this worry in the back of your mind, like me for the past year.

Let me know how you get on xx

  • Yes it's been a big worry for me for a long time especially now with it causing me pain.

How did your appointment go this morning? I hope all went well for you.

Thankfully she is fine now and recovered but she went through alot! Chemo, mastectomy and a hysterectomy as the cancer she had was a rare type and causes you to be high risk for ovarian cancer also.

  • Hi, I'm glad she's recovered now sounds like she went through so much.

The nurse today was able to feel my lump straight away and sent me round for an ultrasound. They couldn't find the lump on the scan despite easily being able to feel it.

She wants me to go back in 6 weeks time and if it's still there she wants to do a core biopsy. She said she wasn't too worried about it but if it's still there she will biopsy to be sure.

I feel I'm no further forward and I now have an extra six weeks of worrying. Even though she wasn't too worried I still don't know what it is so nothing is ruled out xx

  • How strange they can feel it but cannot see it through the scan   I don't understand why they do that to people and make them wait a further 6 weeks! X

  • Can totally relate to you and share similar worries.

I'm 28 and have been diagnosed with three fibroadenomas in the last five years and never had a biopsy. My last visit was last month where the consultant spent about 2 minutes with me, and actually circled the wrong part of my breast.

The ultrasound tech luckily scanned the area around it and found it, saying it's big at 3.2cm but that 'it's my lucky day' that I won't need it biopsied because I'm too young and 'it's unlikely to be anything sinister with my age'.

They didn't even bother looking at my previous fibroadenomas which annoyed me too! Those were both under 2cm when previously scanned so considerably smaller than this new one, I'm particularly worried because it's pretty large.

I don't feel lucky at all - I want peace of mind more than anything and really regret not speaking up more at my appointment!

I'm at my final straw with my boobs growing these weird lumps and I'm now booked in for a private breast reduction in June. I can't bring myself to do proper breast exams each month because the thought of finding another lump sends me into a panic attack.

I'm terrified they'll cut into me and find I'm riddled with cancer and it'll be too late, which I know is silly but I keep seeing stories of girls younger than me with cancer who had similar stories of being fobbed off because of their age.

However I have seen the research about not biopsying them in women under 30 and that is actually quite encouraging, but I'd still like that certainty of knowing it's nothing for sure.

I guess I'll find out for sure after my surgery...
