U3 Thyroid Nodule

Hi everyone, I've been following this page closely for the last few weeks. I found a lump in the side of my neck early February. The doctor referred me to Oral and Maxillofacial and I visited them on 3rd March. When I attended,  they sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound found that the lump I could feel is a reactive lymph node and nothing to worry about, however they also found a nodule on my thyroid which was graded U3. I had FNA there and then and I was told yesterday (6th April), after weeks of worry, that the result has come back THY1 and the FNA must be repeated. I now have to wait another 4 weeks to see the consultant for results and I'm really stressed out. I know the chances of it being cancer are in my favour, but I wondered what other people's experiences are of having to have the FNA repeated? What will happen if it comes back inconclusive again? Will they do a third FNA?

thanks in advance for your replies!

  • Hi. I'm not sure how much use I'll be but since you haven't had any replies, I'll weigh in for what it's worth.

My biopsy showed malignancy so didn't have to repeat but I do know they can remove part of the thyroid and then test it for cancer, so I guess they'd do that if they continued to get indeterminate results.

  • Hello, I'm sorry to hear of what's going on, I'm in a similar position they found a U3 nodule on my thyroid also after months of symptoms and finally finding the lump, I'm awaiting seeing a specialist to see what happens next (I'm guessing biopsy or wait and watch) it's such a scary and stressful time. If you need a chat my messages are always open it's hard feeling alone, but I know here they offer various methods of support and I hope it helps. Fingers crossed for both of us  that we get good results. I hope your second FNA shows negative for anything sinister good luck! Sending love and prayers.

  • Thank you for your reply! I have my fingers crossed for you and I hope everything goes well for you too! It's a worrying time but I feel better knowing there is so much support on here!
