CA125

Im really worried and have been in tears all day. Im 43 and have been having some irregular periods. Sometimes two a month and sometimes very heavy.
I recently had a scan where it showed I had two cysts, one in each ovary, a polyp and a fibroid. The doctor asked me to have a CA125 which has just come back today with a positive test of 43. I am now being referred for an urgent MRI.
I have been googling things, I know it's the worst thing to do ‍♀️ but am petrified it is cancer. I am a really bad overthinker.

  • I was referred for irregular and sometimes heavy bleeding and the scan showed 2 cysts on each ovary, polyps/ fibroids and thickened womb lining and I was promptly sent for both MRI and CT scans .I also had a hysteroscopy and womb biopsies taken.  It did not mean cancer. All my results except for ca19.9 came back normal. Remember that ca125 levels do fluctuate with things like fibroids and menstruation affecting them.

Try and keep yourself busy over the next few weeks. Tests and waiting for results is horrible but Google really does not help. My issues have been put down to hormonal imbalance and I'm on 6 monthly checks. Hopefully it will be something equally innocent and treatable for you. Wish you all the best

  • Thank you.

I'm just spiriralling and have been in tears all morning.

  • I totally understand how you feel. I had a CA125 test around 4 weeks ago after an ultrasound showed a dermoid cyst on my ovary, and it measured 265. I was referred to the hospital and they repeated it 2 weeks later and I've had a CT scan. I've found out today that the CT scan shows no evidence of cancer and the second CA125 test was 130. I'm having another appointment to discuss the findings as there's something going on, but the consultant is sure it's not cancer. I am feeling very relieved and lucky. I hope you get some answers soon and that your CA125 has been elevated for another reason. Best wishes

  • Hi

I have been where you are though it was bowel cancer I was getting checked for. Everything seemed to be pointing to that, all the symptoms, family history etc. My mind went out of control, I was crying all the time, shaking, couldnt eat and so on. After 6 awful weeks of waiting I got the colonoscopy and there was nothing there and now I am annoyed at myself for losing those weeks to worry and panic when in reality even if something had been found it would have accomplished nothing.

Your fibroids and cysts themselves can raise CA125 markers, these would usually be done first then a scan. They are covering all basis which is an excellent thing. It is routine now for any symptoms that overlap a cancer symptom..which there are so many of they get it checked . Like me it was fit test and colonoscopy and now they know nothing is there we are now doing other tests to see what lesser issues are causing my symptoms.

Stay away from google, it is the enemy.

Sending postive vobes your way. xxx

  • Hi Kemmy,

I am delighted to hear that there is no evidence of cancer. This must be a great relief for you. Have you had the appointment with your consultant yet and did she offer any reasons for your elevated CA125?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • At the moment they don't know why it's high and don't think it's to do with the dermoid cyst. I'm having the cyst and ovary removed in a few weeks and at the same time they are going to do a hysteroscopy and womb biopsy. The consultant mentioned adenomyosis, which would explain it. All very strange!

  •

    Hi Kemmy,

I hope that you don't have to wait too long to have the cyst and ovaries removed.  Adenomycosis is fairly common, but the treatment you have planned is the gold standard and should help you get back to normality.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Poppylaw,

I have just come across your post and was wondering how you're doing now? I hope that by now you have had a diagnosis and can start to get back on track again. Please let us know how you are getting on and remember, that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,
Thank you so much for your messgae.
I went in for a procedure last Wendesday and had polyps and fibriods removed, these have been sent off for a biopsy but the consultant was very positve and said they did not think they were sinister. I also had a Marina coil fitted to help control my bleedings.
I am still waiting for the MRI for my cysts but a consultant has looked at these and again has said they do not think they are sinister so everything seems very positve.
I have been told the positive CA125 result is highly likley due tot he above.

  • Hi Poppylaw,

This all sounds very positive. Have you been told when you'll get your biopsy results? It is possibly too earlt to say whether or not the coil has helped the bleeding, but I sincerely hope that it does.

Please keep in touch and let us know when you get your MRI & your results through.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
