ultrasound from rapid referral

Hi, I was given a rapid 2wk referral to ENT  due to a large lump I have on my thyroid/ lots of symptoms. Consultant checked my throat via nasal camera which thankfully was clear. Given the size of the lump visually and after examining he then made an urgent referral for Ultra sound next day, amazing! I'm just wondering how long the results will take and what happens next. A 3.5cm lump found on my thyroid left side and 2 smaller on right side.
Im aware results won't go to GP but does this take long as I'm slightly worried.

  • I had an appointment with my GP about a week after the ultrasound, but it sounds like you already know what was found.

I think it's likely they will send you for a biopsy. Not sure how long this will take as the UK and Ireland are quite different here.

If the biopsy shows it to be benign, well, given that you are experiencing symptoms, they might discuss whether you should have part of your thyroid removed.

If the biopsy is indetermined, they might redo it or they might suggest you have part of your thyroid removed and then they can test it to see for sure.

If it is cancerous (the least likely option), they will remove your entire thyroid and any lymph nodes they are concerned about.

  • Hi Minnie,

Im sorry about your symptoms and the lumps that have been found, I've no idea how long it should take I'm afraid, perhaps give your gp a call to ask what to expect? I'm in a similar situation as you, saw ENT Monday who sent me for a scan which is next week, I have a follow up with him a week after the scan so he can see them and decide if and what to biopsie, my lumps are one in my tonsil and another swollen lymph node in my neck (pre CT scan).

hope you have some clarity soon. Feel free to update me.

  • Thankyou for your support and advice.
I had a private number call today and accidentally cut them off. Thinking it may have been the consultant I called the hospital and asked for the Head and Neck secretary. She confirmed it was the consultant calling! She couldn't discuss what is ahead but explained the Consultant is now going on Easter Holiday, I'm kicking myself this is me all over!  She has confirmed an appointment on 17th April when he returns. I just can't fault the care I've had so far the speed at which I've been looked after.
I hope all goes well with you, take care.

  • Hey Minnie,

oh bless you, knowing me I wouldn't have picked it up either and would be in the same situ as you after. You poor thing you must have been wishing you could go back in time. Hope you managed to enjoy the Easter weekend a bit though and hopefully forget it all a bit.

I've also got my follow up app on the 17th to discuss my CT scan results and then possible biopsie. Hope everything is ok for your ultrasound results. I'm counting down the days!

  • Hi Abi

hope all went well on Monday with your follow up app.
I have been given an urgent referral for biopsy this wk so moving really quick which I'm so grateful of. I'm slightly nervous but hubby said he will attend the appointment with me. I'm dreading it!
