Really worried about high calprotectin content - IBD?

Hi,

I went to my GP and was told I had haemorrhoids. The treatment didn't work so I went back and was sent for a blood test and stool sample.

The blood test came back as normal but the stool sample results say my calprotectin content is 1665. I'm really worried that I've left it too long and can't be treated now as I put off going back to the GP due to being told it was haemorrhoids.

I've had no other symptoms apart from bleeding during bowel movements, hence why I wasn't overly concerned at first. I have no pain or diarrhoea and I feel well in myself.

I'm 19 and really scared that this is something serious, any advice would be appreciated.

  • Welcome to the forum, Koala247.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation but I'm glad that your doctor has your symptoms under investigation.

Hopefully, others who have found themselves in a similar situation will come along shortly with advice.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that if you think that speaking with someone over the phone might be useful, our team of nurses would be happy to take your call.

    They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

You haven't mentioned whether you have another appointment with your GP to talk about those calprotectin levels but if you do, after that, please come back and give us an update.

    Best wishes,

  • Totally forgot I made this post but thought I would give an update a year on. I remember how scared I was when I first got my calprotectin result and how desperately I wanted find someone in the same situation as me, so hopefully this helps anyone who is currently searching the forum for an answer! In short - it was not cancer. I ended up having a colonoscopy and was eventually diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I'm now on medication to help control the bleeding, but I'm very lucky in that it really hasn't affected my life at all. I'm currently at university, I run for fun (which I never thought I would say) and love to go on nights out. So although everything may feel really scary now, just know that a) there are explanations other than cancer and b) even if it is cancer there are amazing treatments out there! So try not to worry (as hard as that is) and look after yourself <3
