Head and Neck - MRI

I had my two week appointment today. The dr himself was lovely had a felt around and agreed my left side of my jaw and neck was swollen but no hard lumps - which also agreed. He put a tube down the nose which was all clear but one point he seemed hesitant and went hmm ahh no all good and carried on, said all was fine but his hesitation makes me think he saw something but also was like could be fine and was on his merry way. It is agreed for me to have an MRI but i was initially referred to ENT because of my dr wanting an ultrasound which I would have presumed would have been done today. Anyway, I now have to wait for an MRI through the post ️ any idea how long it'll take?  Said it could be a muscular thing like teeth grinding but I don't grind my teeth or have any other symptom of teeth grinding. So am now thinking it may be something the muscle or an infection but I have had the swelling for about 7 months + and no other symptoms other than a few sore points in my neck either side of my throat. Just had to get it out of my system as think I'm driving my other half nuts.

I also have never had an MRI so any advice would be great for head and neck mris.

  • Hello luckyleft1,

It sounds like you had a lovely doctor who was thorough in his examination. Don't worry about the hesitation he expressed when examining you as he then said to you that all was fine and he would not have said it if he wasn't sure about it.

It's good though that they are being thorough and that they are sending you to have an MRI so that you get a much clearer picture of what is going on. I am not sure really how long it will take for you to have this MRI but you could perhaps find out by asking the specialist who saw you or getting in touch with the hospital where you will have the MRI. They will have a clearer idea of the waiting list and how long it may take to be seen in your particular area.

You've done the right thing to come here and get this off your chest and I hope that you will meet other members of our forum who have been in a similar situation before and had a head and neck MRI. Hopefully they will be along shortly to tell you exactly what happened to them and how the MRI went. Our website has detailed information on the MRI scan which may be useful to you and will give you an idea as to what to expect.

Waiting for tests and results is such an anxious experience as many members of our forum will know only too well and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that everything turns out to be fine for you and you get some definite answers soon.

    Best wishes,
