Frightened I have bowel cancer at 31

Just wondering if anyone can help since having my c section and needing 5 rounds of antibiotics I noticed a change in my bowel habit from January I'm going twice a day and my movement is formed but comes away quite easy. At first I thought it was to do with antibiotics but still going on so I went straight to drs who have done stool sample for helibactor pylori and calprotectin and they were normal and bloods were normal. They have also examined my tummy and back passage and didn't feel any masses. However I ordered a bowel screening tool offline not a nhs one one that gives results straight away it was a fob test and it came up positive so I'm absolutely past myself that I have cancer the Dr has said they are sending me out a fit test which is the nhs bowel screening tool which goes to labs but my anxiety is horrendous can anyone help ?

  • I had a positive FIT result and awaiting a colonoscopy. Went into a complete panic. It'll be six weeks of waiting in total but I'm 3 weeks in and 3 to go (scheduled for 20 April) The waiting is the worst as your mind works at 200 mph. I looked at ordering another FIT test (just to check again) but on reading lots of "stuff" decided I wouldn't be doing myself any favours and only heighten my anxiety. Trying to stay calm and believe me it's not easy. Your doctor is doing the right thing in getting a FIT done and take it from there. Many people on this CC are through the roof with the fear of the unknown, you're not alone. Stay calm, stay positive.....I'm doing my best ️

  • Thank you for your reply sorry to hear your going through this too have you not been reffered under the 2 week rule ? I thought if you had a positive fit test you were fast tracked. Can I ask did you have any symptoms or was this just routine screening.x

  • It's unlikely to be cancer (though I know that is limited reassurance). Nearly two years ago, I had rectal bleeding, weight loss, occasional loose stools (maybe once a week) and trapped wind). The specialist said that at my age (I was 40 at the time), I'd be "the unluckiest person in the world" if it turned out to be cancer. Thankfully, it was hemhorroids, probably combined with the effects of my thyroid medication and probably the stress of the whole thing as well.

It is terrifying, but the odds are very much in your favour.

  • I have been where you are. I have health anxiety and panic disorder and I went off with the worry.

I had a positive FIT, I am 39, I have episodes of a lot of rectal bleeding, I had excess gas, mucus, alternating diarhea and constipation and a family history of bowel cancer at a young age and guess what ....nothing there. I am so mad at myself for putting my mental health in the toilet from the amount of anxiety I gave myself. Do not google anything, just wait for your test. These home tests arent always accurate and even it the FIT test is positive, that doesn;t mean anything. Of course get it checked as like me, it rules out what it's not so can get to the root of what it is.

  • Thank you for your reply did you have a positive fit test or did they just refer you for a colonoscopy? X

  • Thanks so much for your reply sorry ti hear you went through this did they say why your test was positive but your colonoscopy clear ? It's awful I have terrible health anxiety too did someone ring you to say your fit test was positive? X

  • It was in Ireland at the time the HSE (our health service) was hacked and there was a problem with processing the FIT tests or something. I had the older test, which was negative, but...I think those aren't as sensitive? So they recommended I have the colonoscopy, just in case something was missed.

  • Hi, I had a positive FIT test, and have been referred for a colonoscopy, which is scheduled for next Saturday ( I was referred under the 2 week rule). I am 34. My colorectal nurse has called a couple of times and reassured me every time that I would be super unlucky if it was cancer, but because of a strong family history and my symptoms they want to rule it out and find out exactly what the problem is. I've always been the type of person to only worry when there's something to worry about, so for now I'm calm. I get it's not like that for most people though ( I'm broken I think )

  • Thank you for your reply can I ask if you don't mind what symptoms do you have it's good that they are doing it soon so then you know what is going on x

  • Hi, so I have ALOT of blood, with clots, in my poo, tired all the time, abdominal pain, especially after eating, loose stools, and the feeling of not emptying my bowels completely.
I was told by my nurse that these can all be symptoms of other things aswell though, so I'm not overly concerned. I went to the gp just to shut my husband up mostly lol
