Breast screening call back for further tests

Hi all.  I had my routine mammogram recently and received a call-back letter this morning asking me to come for more tests at the assessment clinic in a few days time.  When I had my previous mammogram 3 years ago they found a lump, did an ultrasound and took a core biopsy.  It turned out to be a benign fibroadenoma and they left a marker in my breast for future examinations.  I don't know whether the call back is related to what they found last time or something new.  Anyway, I am trying not to worry too much (easier said than done as we know!) but I have a couple of questions that perhaps someone who's been in a similar situation might be able to answer.  Firstly would they call me back just because of the fibroadenoma that was already discovered last time, even though there was a marker and they already know about it?  Just to check it maybe?  And secondly, can a fibroadenoma develop into cancer?  I'm 54.  Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Lara! Hope you are well. I'm fine thanks. They got all the cancerous tissue out in surgery so I feel very relieved. Higher grade and bigger than expected - full of surprises!! Just waiting for radiotherapy to start. Been following the advice you gave in another post about putting a lot of moisturizer on the area leading up to it. Also trying to do some exercise - I'm so unfit. We'll see how long that lasts! Xxx

I'm so happy you are finally near finish line

yes the moisturiser is key I was told this on here prior to mi e and it worked amazing

im so fat at the moment not sure if it's cause im so relaxed now feel like I need to be spoiled  with endless trips to ice cream parlour I need to pull my finger out but you no what I think these days so what if im a few pounds over I will do it when im ready not going to worry over it .lol

    love Lara ️

  • You're absolutely right and stressing about being unfit is probably as bad as actually being unfit! Yes, I feel now the end is in sight, phew. And I'm not going to worry about beyond that. Thanks a lot Lara for your support in these posts - I was scared witless at the beginning and it was so reassuring to hear from people who've been through it xx

  • Case 4

yes but look at you now , you have done it you have been amazing and you are out on other side at the time it feels like forever , and as time goes on it realky is like it never happened I'm sure you will be amazing after radiotherapy it's such a relief when it's all over , are you going to be taking a hormone tablet ?

  • Thanks Lara - can't wait for it all to be over. It just consumes all your time and thoughts doesn't it. Yes, I'll be having hormone tablets I think. Were yours prescribed before or after radiotherapy? Does the GP prescribe them or the consultant? It's just occurred to me that the doctor who did my surgery has signed me off so hopefully it's not her! Haven't been through the menopause so think I'll get tamoxifen xx

  • Case

I was given the prescription by the oncologist at my last radiotherapy session I had to start them the day after it finished

I also started tamoxifen to be honest they have been ok to be fair prior to taking them I thought I was going to turn in to a monster and look like a man lol but actually nothing of the sort has happened or changed a few flushes about 6 weeks in but they have subsided now a good tip is the brand you take if you are suited to one I read on here at my time that ladies were saying tillomed brand was the better so I went with that and they were so right

I had another brand called workhardt and I was like a zombie for a few days o asked my chemist to only get this brand as I don't accept any other and they have been so helpful but I have been told if you go to boots tillomed are always available, this is my experience I'm not sure if it's right for everyone but thought I needed to tell you

  • Oh, that is very useful to know thanks. Great that you haven't had too many side-effects (man monster yes haha!!) - had told my husband to run for cover but there's hope for me!!

  • A quick update. I now have my appointment to remove the rest of the abnormal cells on 26th May. They are going to do this via another vacuum-assisted biopsy. They say on the letter that it will be ultrasound guided but when I had my previous biopsy it was mammogram guided as they said they couldn't see the microcalcifications on the ultrasound, so I'm not sure about that. Once they've removed everything they'll test it to make sure all ok. So about a month and a half from now until I get those results, but I'm hopeful for a good outcome.

  • Hi Nixbytheresa,

I am glad to hear that you have at long last got your appointment through and I hope that all goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine. I will. I hope you are doing well? X
