Pain/slight swelling left breast

Hey,first time posting and worried sick.
I have a breast clinic appointment tomorrow which is great but I have been having pain/some swelling in left breast for around 8 weeks. I went to the Gp after 4 weeks ,she done the 2WW referral.Originally had an appointment for 13th March but this was cancelled due to the strikes.

my symptoms started with a shooting pain,I checked myself and couldn't feel anything at first other than a really tender area on the upper part of my breast. I now have an ache into my armpit, feels heavier and tight. I'm starting to think my anxiety is making this worse.I've ruled out hormonal purely because it's only 1 breast and I've had 2 monthly cycles on time with ovulation in between.

I'm certain now I can feel some lumps, not sure if they are as hard as they feel or if I'm literally panicking. I'll be having an ultrasound according to the Gp and no mammogram as I'm 34 so too young to qualify.Could they still do one?

has anyone else been in a similar situation and it's just been cysts?I think the whole Idea of even going to clinic is frightening me let alone the obvious pain I'm in and swelling. Also will they do bloods too or is that not relevant unless they find something that looks untoward?

    Hi Megzzz,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms and the worry that they are causing you. You are doing the right thing by getting them checked out. I see that you have an appointment at the breast clinic on 23rd and that you are panicking. You will find the staff at these clinics are usualy very helpful and understanding.

You will speak to a consultant about your symptoms and will then have your breasts and uderarm examined. You may then be sent for an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. If you have a biopsy, it can take from 1-3 weeks to get the results back. Be sure to ask how long they think that it will take, before you leave the clinic. Younger people don't usually have a mammogram, as their breasts are denser and don't always show up so clearly. However some consultants still do this with younger people - presumably, when the breasts are not too dense? It is a fact that only 20% of those who attend the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and never had any bloods taken - it was just the three tests mentioned initially.
I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

    Hi Megzzz,

I hope that all went well for you today. On both occasions I found the lump myself when I was showering. I had no other symptoms.

    Kind regards,

  • So I had my appointment and to be honest it was a complete waste of time. I was examined by a female doctor, she asked my age and if I smoked.I said used to,she done an very quick examination ,told me breast pain is down to smoking then said I'll send you for a scan and you'll go home.

I then had an ultrasound by a male doctor,he was okay.Kept going over the area that is tender then said nothing untoward which is fantastic.Told me to go home and contact GP for a blood test.No explanation,no biopsy but still have pain and swelling.I mentioned my armpit ache,he said it's because I shave under my arms and can let bacteria in.Never known an explanation like that especially as the armpit issue came after my breast pain and swelling.I'm ecstatic he see nothing untoward but still no reason why it's happening.

    regards

  • Hello,

Sorry you didn't have a great experience at the clinic but really great news that you've been told there is nothing untoward - that must be a real relief. I've seen lots of people talking about evening primrose oil or starflower oil - maybe worth trying that to deal with the pain?

  • Hi Megzzz,

I am so sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the way your appointment went. Although your examination wasn't up to much, it sounds as if you had a thorough scan, which is more important.

It is really great news that nothing untoward was detected. I hope that you can arrange a blood test soon and might find a less worrying reason for your symptoms. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
