Urgent Colonoscopy

Hi,

Hope you are all well. I've had a positive FIT test result and also have had low iron anemia for years. I just wanted some advise because someone from the hospital contacted me a few days after I took a FIT test and this was on a Saturday. She didn't really giving anything away or telling me about my FIT result but just said someone will be in contact urgently in a couple of days (which they was). I found this pretty bizarre as I was expecting a result after a week or so and not over the weekend. It just honestly has left me very worried. I'm very young, mid twenties and I'm not sure how to feel. I know that bowel cancer is a rare occurrence for people my age but that call has honestly left me very uneasy. I was told by a nurse that I was being booked for an urgent colonoscopy a couple of days after the previous call and that's about it but the wait for my colonoscopy is just over three weeks. I just wanted to know if it is normal procedure for the hospital to contact a patient directly over the weekend after a positive FIT result. My GP did not contact me so I'm just curious.

  • Welcome to the forum sdf_24 although I'm sorry for the worry this phone call has caused.

Each hospital and their departments may operate differently to other hospitals, especially those in other parts of the UK, so you may find this to be standard procedure for where you're based. Try not to panic or let your mind run away from if you can. Much easier said than done I know, but hopefully hearing about some of our member's experiences will help to put your mind at ease.

I also hope it helps to know that 9 out of 10 people who are given an urgent referral are not diagnosed with cancer. You can find out more about this just here.

We're here for you sdf_24 and hope all goes well with your colonoscopy in a few weeks time.

    Kind regards,
