Has anyone else experienced these symptoms

Hi I'm 43 and female. For the last 2 weeks approximately I have had abdominal cramps similar to menstrual cramps that are not because it's the time of the month. I have had worse pain (constant dull nagging pain) on my left side of abdomen and occasional fluttering type pain around the middle of tummy. I've had pretty constant lower back pain too for the last week. For the last 3 days I have had bright red blood when I have wiped by back passage and on one occasion I have had red blood splattered in the loo. I have dark brown oily stools which are fairly soft. I'm being referred for investigations and bloods because my father had bowel cancer. Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone?

  • Yes! I'm also 43 and female and it sounds exactly like what I was experiencing (apart from the lower back pain), before being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis following a colonoscopy.

My mum died fairly young from bowel cancer, so I was convinced that's what I had. I'd had bleeding on and off for years but had put it down to a fissure. It was a big explosion of blood that finally made me get it checked out.

I'm now on intermittent medication to combat it and most of the time I'm fine, but I do still get that lower left side pain sometimes (these past 2 weeks actually) which tell me that I'm starting a flare and need to medicate before it gets worse and the bleeding starts again. It's a completely manageable condition for me, so I'm hoping that you will also find out that it's not what you fear.

  • Thank you for taking the time to message and that is really helpful to know. I hope you continue to keep your UC managed with medication. I'm very sorry to hear about your Mum. Sending best wishes for the future.
