Any recent experience with large ovarian cyst?

I had an ultrasound in February that revealed a large ovarian cyst (14cm). I've been told it's a "multilocular cyst with vascularised thick septae" by a colorectal consultant that I had initially been referred to. He referred me for an MRI and blood tests and now I have a gynaecology consultant appointment on Friday.

I wondered if anyone had any recent experience of a similar size/type of cyst? How long did it take from the gynae referral to the next step? I am aware that for larger cysts a laparoscopy or laparotomy is generally conducted. I know that sometimes one of your ovaries has to be removed.

Would just appreciate anyone else's experience. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole situation. I know it's very unlikely to be cancerous and that the vast majority of cysts are benign.

  • Welcome to the forum Clararose92 although I'm sorry about the cyst that's been found and for the worry this is causing.

If you use the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above you should come across quite a few discussions about large ovarian cysts within the Cancer Chat community. You're welcome to reach out to our members on these discussions but hopefully some of them will stop by to share their experiences and advice with you here as well.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease before you see the gynaecology consultant.

We're thinking of you Clararose92 and will have our fingers crossed for good news on Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Hip went down the same route as you with colorectal referral to gynaecology oncology. My bilateral cysts were complex so solid. After mri and more bloods . I had an ultrasound/Transvaginal scan.
The initial surgeosaidvthey wouldn't do anything until they were over, 10cm lm over 65 and my overies should be dormant.
The oncology surgeon said that she would remove them and l had surgery about 6 weeks later. The left sided pain was probably caused by the extensive adhesions that took hours to remove

my multiple biopsies took about 5 weeks and were fortunately benign.
l hope you have a similar experience and all is sorted soon

  • Hi, I am going through the exact same thing. Had an ultrasound this past Monday found a 13cm cyst on right ovary. Haven't been told anything else yet. I got referred to the gynaecology department that day and bloods were taken the same day. I have an appointment with the consultant on Monday. It's a bit of a worry. I'm 30.

  • Hi my daughter had a huge ovarian cyst when she was pregnant they removed it at 15 weeks they said there was a risk of losing the baby but allowing it to burst was not an option. They were both fine once she recovered from the surgery.
not all cysts are cancerous and l hope that you are okay

l hope your consultant can reassure you on Monday. Take care

  • Hi be patient and go for your appointments 9/10 of these cysts are harmless try not to worry and yes I know easier said than done!
I had a rather large one a few years ago and unfortunately I didn't know about it until I was in agonising pain with it rupturing, I was rushed to hospital and given lots of morphine thank fully I survived it and after running tests and scans all was good apart from a uti caused by the rupture so on that note thank goodness you know about it they are seeing you and will make a plan to clear it which is all so positive as you wouldn't want to not know trust me! Massive good luck for your appointment and a speedy resolve to sort it out! Let us know how you get on sending love xxx
