Biopsy results 4 weeks

I was told to wait 3 weeks for a call for biopsy results from my GP by the surgeon and my GP surgery agrees that is normal. It's been 4 weeks and the GP surgery have heard nothing and suggested I call the department to see if they have had them to pass over. The lady on reception refuses to take my name to look untill it's been at least 6 weeks and says I will get a letter.

it's really upsetting me that they won't even look, is this normal? Even if she checked and said no results yet I would feel better and forget about it for another week.

I also now feel like I don't know if im waiting for a call or letter and if the results don't get passed on it will just be lost in the system because they refuse to look

  • Hi Alwaysswimming,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this is difficult - this kind of uncertainty and waiting for information is never easy to deal with, especially if it feels like they aren't helping or answering questions. Unfortunately it is relatively common to have a little wait for results, however if it has gone beyond the expected timeframe that you were given to begin with, then it sounds like you are within your rights to enquire about this.

If you'd like to chat to anyone at all, you are welcome to give our nurses a call. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

I hope you're able to hear more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • I finally had a call 6 weeks later and now have to wait untill next Friday for them to give me the results in person, I'm now really worried because my Friend who had a biopsy recently at the same hospital got her results over the phone in 3 weeks.

Is it worth riding my GP or anyone to find out the result? It seems really unfair that they have the results and I have to wait another week and a half to find out

  • I know how worrying the wait for your results will be. Personally I wouldn't push your GP to give you them. Most GP's don't understand the complexities of histology reports, it's not something they routinely deal with. I've known patients push for their GP to tell them and they've been given misleading information that has caused even more worry. Also, the GP will not be privy to the decision made at the MDT (Multi disciplinary team) meeting as to what the next steps should be so it would leave more unanswered questions.

Hopefully the results won't be as bad as you fear but best to get them from an expert who then can answer any questions you may have. Good luck,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hey angie thank you  so much for your reply I feel a lot calmer now I've had some time to process and it really helped to hear what you said, I'm going to keep my days filled untill I get to that appointment and I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
