    Hi Sammy,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

You don't say what age you are. The three most common tests are mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. Mammograms are not usually carried out in younger people, as they usually have denser breasts and this doesn't give a very clear picture. Waiting times for your first appointment and results can vary throughout the country. The people who are likely to give you the most accurate answer to this is your care team, as they know what the waiting times are likely to be in their area. It is also a good idea to ask this question before you leave your appointment.

On the whole, you should receive an appointment for the breast clinic within 2 weeks from the date of referral. Results seem to vary from 1-3 weeks on average. Try not to panic, as not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign fibroadenoma or cysts. It is a fact that 80% of those who attend the breast clinic will get the all clear, so here's hoping that you'll be one of the lucky ones!

If you are lucky enough to attend a one stop clinic, you may get your results on the same day, but this doesn't always happen.

Even if you are unfortunate enough to get a cancer diagnosis, treatments have improved dramatically in the past few years. I lost my own mum to secondary breast cancer. I myself have had 2 bouts of breast cancer, but there is just no comparison between the level of treatment which we both experienced. I am 13 years down the line since diagnosis and still leadibg a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
