Periods after 2 years on Tamoxifen

I had breast cancer 2 years ago and put on tamoxifen which stopped my periods completely. Started bleeding lightly yesterday and today its a full period. I spoke to my breast nurse who said keep an eye on it and to contact GP if it gets worse. Will contact them on Monday. Has anyone else had similar problems

  • Hi,

you definitely don't need it on top of everything else. It might be worth eating lots of iron riched foods. Losing a lot of blood can make people anemic. I feel shattered.

Good luck at the doctors tomorrow xx

  • Hey,

Just a quick update, I ended up going to urgent care and they contacted gynaecology on call, I got an appointment yesterday, had a external scan and internal scan, they said the lining of my womb is very thick so they want to take some biopsies, not sure if its related to tamoxifen, just waiting on a date for biopsies,

My bleeding has finally stopped, just a bit anxious about the biopsies

Hope you get your scan date soon x

  • Hi,

Thats really good that they got you in so quick. I had my scan today and they said my lining looked ok. She can't explain why I'm still bleeding (17 days today). I have a hysteroacopy appointment on the 12th just for further investigation.

Try not to worry to much about the biopsy. I know it's easier said than done.  If you stopped taking Tamoxifen your body could be adjusting to the new changes. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way. Let us know how you get on. Here to chat if you need too.

    Take care x

  • I'm still waiting on hysteroscopy appointment. Gynaecology doctor said 4 weeks for urgent referral. Phoned hospital 4 weeks later just in case the letter hadn't been delivered. They said 10 weeks for urgent referrals. Just over 6 weeks waiting and still no appointment. I haven't had anymore bleeding.since 17 March so still to find out what caused the bleed. Also started on Citalopram anti depressants for my hot flushes. Just thought I would try to see if they would help. 4 weeks in an no difference whatsoever. Will wait till 6 weeks and contact doc again.

  • Update on bleeding. Only had the one period in March. Eventually had hysteroscopy which showed there was a fibroid in there but not sure if that's what caused the bleeding. Said lining of womb was fine. So all good. Was given antidepressants in march to try for flushes by hospital breast review doctor. Citalopram first which made no difference then was swapped to venlafaxine 37.5mg. No difference. Upped the dosage to 75mg. No difference but was told to keep with it as it takes a while to kick in. In November 2023 I forgot to take 1 tablet. The next day I was dizzy, brain zaps, feet sick etc. Googled missing a disease and it said it was withdrawal symptoms. Contacted docs as I wanted off them. She said withdrawal wouldn't happen overnight. She gave me a reduced dose tobyake for 2 weeks then taje alternative days for a week. Omg I have been dizzy all this time with clicking brain zaps in head, feel irritable, sick, can't drive due to movement in head and eyes, can't sleep, feel mire upset. I am determined not to take one as I have heenan off them now for a week but still the symptoms persist. Why do they give these horrible tablets out. If I was taking these for actual depression there is no way you would get off them with all these symptoms.  Doc also gave me a new tablet to try Oxybutynin 2.5 which is used for overactive bladder. I read up on eithdrawal symptoms for this and decided I couldn't face any more damage to my body. Flushes are horrendous just now. Where will it end
