Periods after 2 years on Tamoxifen

I had breast cancer 2 years ago and put on tamoxifen which stopped my periods completely. Started bleeding lightly yesterday and today its a full period. I spoke to my breast nurse who said keep an eye on it and to contact GP if it gets worse. Will contact them on Monday. Has anyone else had similar problems

  • Debbie

  • My flushes are terrible. Some days they are every 40 minutes. Throughout the night they wake me up also. They definitely haven't eased up over the last 2 years.

  • Debbie

m finding each month in its worse and worse can go give anything or have you tried anything herbal ? I have been waking up hot this week

  • All that has been recommended for flushes is col pads, fans and layered clothing. The nurse did mention about anti depressants that might help but wasn't wanting to go down that route. I've also noticed the more I do exercise the more flushes I get.

  • Thank you for the help , deffo same no way antidepressants x

  • Hi Debbietimtom. The exact thing has happened to me. I've been on Tamoxifen for almost a year but haven't had a period for 17 months which stopped when I was having chemo. If you don't mind me asking, how long was your period for? I'm now on day 12 and it's showing no signs of slowing down. I've been the doctors and they have referred me to the gynaecologist. I'm just waiting on a scan of the womb. They have told me to carry on taking Tamoxifen in the meantime. Did you contact your GP?

  • I take evening primrose and I've found that to be really good. The nurse also advised sage. She said evening primrose or sage where both ok to take whilst on tamoxifen and can help with flushes

  • Hi,

I stopped tamoxifen at the end of December 2022 after taking for 4 years due to breast cancer reacurance, while taking the tamoxifen I hardly had any periods and they stopped altogether around September 2022....in March I got a period which lasted for 2 weeks, I've just got another period which started around the 10th April, however this time it is so heavy I can't leave the house and I am losing large clots...I also started chemo on the 12th April 1st cycle of 6, I have contacted the oncology nurses regarding the bleeding and they don't think its related to treatment, the only thing I can think it is is from stopping the tamoxifen...I am going to see my GP on Monday as I have never in my life experienced bleeding like this...has anyone experienced bleeding like this after stopping tamoxifen??

  • Hi,

I am currently on day 13 of my heavy period and it’s showing no signs of stopping. I am still taking Tamoxifen and was surprised I started bleeding as I’ve not had a period for 17 months. Mine stopped whilst on chemo. I do remember that my first period during chemo was a lot heavier and longer. Then it stopped.

When you see your GP tomorrow they may refer you to the gynaecologist. That’s what mine has done. I’ve already been given an appointment for the 10th May but just waiting on a scan of the womb which needs to be before the 10th. I think it’s definitely worth getting a scan, even just for piece of mind.

I’m sorry to hear about your recurrence. Good luck with treatment. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way x

  • Thanks so much for your reply...

I definitely will ask for a scan as the clots im losing are ridiculous...plus I don't want my bloods going out of range because of the chemo...my oncologist has referred me for an ovary ablation but thats not till after chemo ends which won't be till the end of July....

The effects of chemo are ok so far its just this bleeding, you just don't need it on top of everything..
