5 months, waiting for histology results

I had a dermoid cyst removed from my ovary at the start of October last year. My surgeon told me it would take a few weeks to get the results from histology.

I feel bad even asking because the chance of the demoid cyst being cancerous is very low - but its been 5 months since I had the operation and I still don't have the all clear.

The cyst was a solid, complex mass - measuring 7.5cm x 5.5cm so fairly big

I think the dermoid grew fast because I had an ultrasound in 2019 to investigate pelvic pain - and they didn't mention I had a cyst - but it must have been quite big at that time. My blood test didn't show raised CA125 but my WBC counts were all raised.

I know my sample was lowest priority, and that services are under pressure. I sent an email to my surgeon's secretary a few weeks ago, and spoke to her last week and she said she would try and get an update, but I haven't heard back yet.

Just wondering if anyone else has waited this long for results? Shoud I chase again or should I wait? Thank you.

  • Hi l had complex ovarian cysts removed and I had my results from my surgeon when she rang, for my follow up appointment 5 weeks post op.

I had a big op due to extensive adhesions on the left side and they took multiple biopsies. This was during Covid but the results didn't take too long.

l hope you have your results soon and they are benign

lf you don't get any luck with the secretary ask for a telephone appointment with your surgeon. My surgeon was available through the secretary, when l asked about taking a new medication pre op the surgeon gave me a date for surgery.

  • Thank you for your reply Susie

On Friday, I managed to track down the lab my sample was sent to, and the results have now been sent to my GP surgery and are now in a queue to be looked at.

My surgeon's secretary never got back to my request for help with this, and I was never given a followup appointment.

Just want the all clear and to get this off my mind as the whole ordeal was quite traumatic, and its been 5 months. Thanks for your support, it helped give me the confidence to chase the result.

  • I hope you are able to get your results from your surgery soon at least there's some movement and the surgery should get them . I would give them a few days then go into the surgery and ask for the results.
    take care
