8 wks of waiting for a diagnosis

Hi everyone

Not sure what I'm messaging for except feel there may be someone else in my position.  On 9th Jan I got referred as I had a breast lump. I suspected it was another cyst as have had 2 previously.  I attended hospital 10 days later for it to be confirmed as a cyst and drained. Unfortunately my mammogram & ultrasound detected some other irregular shape within my breast. So that day I had a core needle biopsy.  The weeks waiting for my results were agonising and when I finally had an appointment I was told that the results were inconclusive and I'd have to have further biopsies taken (larger amount). Again a waiting game for appointment. I had the biopsy taken last Wednesday and now have another 2 wk wait for results.  So in total its been 8wks since referral and hopefully results this time. I'm completely stressed out and feel like its consuming my life.  One minute I think hey must be ok as would surely be told by now, then on the other hand I'm thinking it is cancer. Has anyone else had to wait this long for results and was the outcome all clear or cancer? Thankyou for reading my post hugs to all.

  • Hi Daisy

I'm sorry to read your post and understand how worried and stressed you must be. Everyone will tell you that this is the most difficult thing to go through as you're dealing with the unknown. Once you get the results, even if it's not the news you want, you have the facts and know what you're dealing with.

From my initial breast unit appointment/imaging/biopsies to getting results was 3 weeks, but one of the biopsies (on lymph node) was inconclusive. The other biopsy on the breast lump showed that it was cancer. I had the lymph node biopsy done again 2 and a half weeks later, and got the result after one week, so 8 weeks in total from seeing my GP to the full diagnosis, 6 weeks from breast unit appointment to full diagnosis. Timings will vary from area to area, depending on staffing, backlogs and lab processing times. I was told that even aggressive/active breast cancers don't grow that quickly and a few weeks of delay will not make a difference.

But things do get overlooked sometimes from an admin point of view, so I would call the breast unit and check if the results have come back or when they are expected, and make sure you have an appointment booked to get the results, unless you are happy to have someone phone you with them. I would recommend you attend and take someone with you. You may not need it, and I hope and pray you won't, but it's a good idea just in case. You'll be anxious anyway and it's probably best to have someone drive you.

In the meantime, try to keep busy and distracted. The best thing you can do is go for a couple of walks through the day if you can as that will really help you cope with the stress of waiting. Do feel free to keep in touch if you want a virtual shoulder to cry on.

    God bless
