Confused about kidney cysts. Can they cause pain?

Hi thank you for the add.

Dec 2021 I was at A&E with my asthma and had a chest x-ray. A few weeks later I was called and said the X-ray had been checked and they found a shadow and I needed a Ct scan. I had a Ct scan and they said I had lung nodules and they were to be monitored every 3 months. December 2022 I had a call from the hospital and they said something had come up on my kidneys during my recent lung Ct scan and I was to have an ultrasound on my kidneys, so I had this and the sonographer called another dr in and they said I had multiple cysts in both kidneys and also my liver and I never heard any thing more.

Middle of feb the hospital calls again and says I need another ultrasound on my kidneys and they would be in touch with an appointment, but a few days later I was in A&E with kidney and groin pain, I had a Ct scan and they said I had 3 small kidney stones and said these should pass.

I get a letter in the post a few days later saying about the kidney stones and also there is a few cysts on each kidney and also the liver and these were inline with simple cysts.

Last Wednesday the hospital called and said the urologist had held a mdt meeting and I needed to go for another urgent Ct scan. I went for this today and had a scan with dye.

I’m obviously worried as I am told every thing is ok but then being sent for urgent scans. When they first found the cyst in December 2022 they was some confusion over if it should be classed as a non complex or complex cyst.

What is the chances of the cyst being something more sinister? And do cysts cause pain as I still have kidney and groin pain but not sure if this is due to the kidney stones?

Thank you

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Zozos

I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing these symptoms and discomfort for quite some time now but I'm glad you're being checked by your doctors.

Hopefully, others who have experienced a similar situation will come along shortly to chat with you but your best bet would be to speak with your medical team about this as they're the only ones who can diagnose you properly.

I hope all turns out okay for you and that these cysts prove to be nothing sinister.

    Best wishes,
