recall after routine mammogram

I had my first ever mammogram 3 weeks ago (I'm 50, will be 51 in 2 months) and this morning have had a letter saying that my mammogram was unclear and that I have to return next week for further tests.

No family history of breast cancer. I am absolutely terrified.

    Hi Knittingknitting,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

This happened to me too. Try not to worry, as more recalls tend to be made after a first mammogram and not all end in unwelcome results. With later mammograms, they can always compare to previous ones, if the picture is unclear, but with your first, they have to do another one, because there is nothing to compare to.

I sincerely hope that all will be fine next week.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Knittingknitting,

I agree with Jolamine.   This happened to me too at 50 and they recalled me.  As usual they don't say why and it's pretty terrifying.  Please don't panic.  Mammograms are always double read and a big part of interpreting them is to compare any changes from previous images. They've nothing to compare to for the first one.  In all probability it won't be anything sinister, they just want to take a closer look.  You'll probably have a different type of mammogram that magnifies.

Remember, this is why we have mammograms to check everything is ok.  Sometimes they will spot some discrepancies but that doesn't mean it's cancer.  They're always very thorough and that's a good thing.

    Best of luck

    Mary

  • Thank you both for taking the time to reply. I have calmed down a bit since the letter arrived. Everything you say about lack of comparison makes sense. I certainly can't feel anything lumpy which is reassuring.

Still very worrying but I am feeling more positive than earlier.

    thanks again.

  • I was also recalled after my first mammogram. I had another mammogram, ultrasound, biopsies and a chat with the consultant with my husband asked to come in - other women came and went with just a repeat mammogram while my husband was waiting for me in the waiting room. I was still given the all clear and now have a marker in my breast for the area that concerned them, that was thoroughly checked out. I was then recalled after my second routine mammogram and instantly panicked that they must have got it wrong the previous time - this time I was in the department less than 15 mins - straight to ultrasound, a cyst so deep in my breast it could not be felt, it was drained and I was on my way.
