What to expect from gynae appointment

As a bit of back story, I had a baby a couple of years ago. Had some bleeding after sex intermittently, chalked it up to baby related stuff. GP wasn't very interested and advised to wait until smear due in a few months. Results came back negative from that (though I did have cause for concern years ago and went for regular tests which eventually came back clear).

At Christmas, I had a big bleed after sex so went to the GP who made me do a self administered swab (with no instructions other than "stick it in and then put it in the tube") and ordered blood tests alongside a ultrasound (which, when I had it done, the tech said looked clear) and a gynae referral. I have not heard back from the GP about any of this (although I've signed up to be able to see the results online and the swab came back clear, possibly because I didn't do it properly, but I obviously have no idea what the blood results mean). Have an appointment next month with the gynaecologist and not sure what to expect?? The information says they might order a smear, blood tests or a ultrasound scan, but I've already had all those.

No one, apart from the nurse doing the smear, has actually taken a look yet. Is that normal? I'm continuing to have bleeds but unsure of other symptoms since I have a 2 year old I'm tired all the time anyway. I went to the GP with back pain keeping me up at night but she prescribed vit D and it seems to have got better. Sometimes I get abdominal discomfort but that could be anything! I feel like maybe, without any other symptoms, they might just keep me on the books until something else happens? I don't know what I should be asking for to be honest. Even if it's not cancer, I surely can't just be bleeding for no reason? (I'm confused by the whole process if I'm honest because as far as I was aware, I was diagnosed with PCOS whilst I was at uni and a few years down the line I mentioned that offhand to a GP at a different surgery after I moved who laughed at me and said there was no record of that on my file and no one has mentioned it since).

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me what the diagnostic process was like if you didn't have many concrete symptoms?

  • Hi Blankspace200,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like you're going through a bit of a tough time trying to get some answers - I can understand some of the things must have been confusing up to this point.

The main thing is that you have an appointment booked with the specialist. This will give you the opportunity to hopefully get some clarity and further information. It would be a good idea to jot down your questions - including those you've written here, plus any others you think of - so you can discuss it with them, and make any notes of what they say. Try to maximise your time at the appointment by doing this and talking anything through that you want to.

In the meantime, if you'd like to speak to someone, you are welcome to give our nurses a call. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
