Call back after mole removal - anxious

I had a mole removal 3 weeks ago at the hospital on my arm and was told I would receive my results by letter and the surgeon even specifically said she was pleased with my stitches and thought it would heal well but they never really have to see people back unless it's bad news to really see these things. I received a phone call today from the hospital telling me I needed to come back on Friday to see them, they explained as they're a secretary they couldn't tell me anything and wouldn't even tell me if it was further treatment or for bad news etc or if I could go back to work afterwards. I have never had anything like this before I'm only in my mid 20s but am pale with red hair as well as having a family history of skin cancer so I know potentially more susceptible to skin cancers. Has anyone been called to go back after a removal and if so what for? Is there any chance I'll arrive Friday and they'll want to do any form of treatment or tests on me? I'm feeling so worried and really would appreciate any experiences or help

  • Hi,

I know it's worrying to get a call back but it doesn't always mean it's because it's bad news. Sometimes patients are called back because the mole was severely dysplastic - it's benign but precancerous and they like to check any other moles the patient has. If it is melanoma, it may be very shallow and therefore early stage and easily treated.

If it is melanoma they won't treat you or carry out any tests on Friday - they will give you the results and explain the next steps if treatment is necessary. If it is, they will want to remove further tissue - a Wide Local Excision - but that will be arranged for a later date and fully explained on Friday.

Try not to worry too much, treatment for melanoma is much better than when I was first diagnosed. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi Angie

thank you so much that's really put my mind at ease I was so scared of the uncertainty and spiralling over why they would want me back face to face, fingers crossed,

    thanks

    Izzy

  • Hi Angie,

sadly it was diagnosed as a melanoma, a 1b? I do have to have a wide local excision but felt a bit mentally prepared thanks to your response earlier this week, still a shock though

  • I'm sorry to hear that Izzy but at least it's been caught early and, after the WLE and a period of monitoring, hopefully you will be good to go. I will send you a friend request in case you'd like to ask any questions by private message.  xx
