Post menopausal bleeding / here we go again

Hi, I'm 53 post menopausal lady. Had breast cancer 6 years ago which meant a 5 year course of tamoxifen.
Had a polyp removed in January of 21 when I had a tiny amount of spotting.

fast forward to this week, started a full blown vaginal bleed, sore breast etc. went to have bloods done yesterday. Phoned for results this morning. I was tested for lft, full blood count and protein which are all normal.

I have an ultrasound booked on Sunday. My question is, if it was, god forbid, cancer, would that show in a normal protein blood count or would I need a CA125 specific test?

  • Hello Rubensmum

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had a post-menopausal bleed. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about what may have caused this.

Whilst it's reassuring to hear that the blood tests you've had to date haven't raised any concerns it's good to know that you have an ultrasound arranged for tomorrow. Hopefully, those results will give your GP further information about what might be going on for you at the moment.

The CA125 test that you mention is a specific blood test that can be used as part of the diagnostic process for ovarian cancer but it's worth noting that a raised CA125 level can be caused by other gynaecological conditions.

We know that for many people, particularly if you've previously had a cancer diagnosis, this period of waiting and uncertainty can be very difficult. Hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for answers but in the meantime, if you'd like to chat with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
