Mucous in stool. Concerns?

Wondering how concerned i should be.

My GP referred me to a gastroenterologist after some changes in my bowel habits. He did some lab work that all came back normal and referred me from there.

In early January i had a bowel movement that was just mucous. Kind of yellow/cream color. And every single bowel movement since then has had mucous in it. Which i had never had before. I feel like I've had a lot of lower abdominal bloating, and some of my more recent bowel movements have had dark pink/brownish mucus. No diarrhea or excessive gas. And the soonest i can get into any GI doctor is May 18th, which is so far away.

How concerned should i be? Should i just go to a doctor that i have to pay out of pocket for?

My iron and RBCs were low in November. After oral iron it went to normal as of January.

  • Hello Ariel_inari and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

It sounds like your GP is being thorough and it is reassuring that the lab work has come back normal. It's good that you have been referred to a gastroenterologist given your symptoms but it sounds like they are not treating it as an urgent referral and that they do not seem to be overly concerned. I can understand though why you would want to be seen sooner and are considering going private. There is information on the NHS website about going private on this page.  But if your GP is not overly concerned, it might be worth just waiting for your appointment in a couple of months unless your symptoms worsen and you feel you need to be seen more urgently. Perhaps it would be a good idea to seek a second opinion just to get reassurance that it is ok to wait until the 18th of May. You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page

I hope that you find out more soon about what has been causing these issues and that things improve for you. I will now let our members who have had similar symptoms come and say hello and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
