Both ovaries enlarged

Hi,

I've been having abnormal vaginal bleeding since June last year, saw my GP who referred me for a scan, scan showed thickened endometrial lining and a 3.8cm cyst on my left ovary, 5.7cm on my right. Referred urgently to Gynae, seen on Tuesday and they did another scan which showed no thickening of the endometrium but she said both ovaries were enlarged. She referred me urgently for bloods and said she'll see me again in 6 weeks but will phone me if needed before. Wasn't too worried until I saw that all 6 of the bloods are checking for different ovarian cancer markers and now terrified she thinks it's Cancer, especially as it's taken so long for me to be seen. Doesn't help that my mum was diagnosed with cancer at 45 (I'm now 41) and she died at 53 from it

  • Hello chas21,

It's normal to be worried after being told both our ovaries were enlarged and that there is a cyst on your left ovary but try not to be overly alarmed until you get all your results as there are so many other things it could be other than ovarian cancer. So many other conditions can triggers similar symptoms so try not to anticipate the worst if you can and resist the urge to look online for answers as this will only make you worry even more. Your doctor may have referred you for a CA125 blood test and our website has useful information on blood tests for ovarian cancer but it is important to remember, as is mentioned on this page, that some other conditions of the womb and ovaries also produce a high level of CA125. It's good that they are being very thorough in their investigations and try no to be overly worried if you can until you get the full picture and all your results.

Given what sadly happened to your mum, it's completely understandable that you are feeling this way and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing too concerning and which can be easily treated. It's hard to wait weeks for answers and I hope that some of our members who have been through something similar will pop by and share their story with you. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm keeping myself busy keeping my mind off things, but keep expecting the phone to ring with bad news. I don't think I'd have been worried if it was just the ca125 blood test as I had that back in August last year and it was fine, but it was just because of the big range of cancer markers she was checking, AFP, beta-HCG, ca19.9, ca125, CEA, HE4 that got me worried. I think if I get past the 2-3 week mark after having my bloods taken without a phone call from her I'll start to relax as no news is good news. It doesn't help that I have a constant ache/pressure feeling in my pelvis so it's a constant reminder

  • Hi sorry that you are going through this, l have had complex ovarian cysts 4cm and 6cm. After the scans ect l had surgery they spent 4 1/2 hours removing  extensive adhesions on the left side which probably explained the pain l had been having. The waiting for results was a bit worrying but fortunately they were benign

l hope you have the same outcome

    take care

    susie

  • Hi Susie,

Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry to hear you had such a terrible time but glad the cysts were benign. I'm hoping the consultant is just being very thorough, she also put me on the pill (I'm assuming to shrink the cysts), so hoping that that works and I may not need surgery, but would be happy to have it if it gets rid of the blasted things!

    Take care

  • Hello

I'm sorry that you are also going through this, and about your mum. I had an MRI last week for a complex ovarian cyst and am currently waiting on the results. I have pelvic pressure too.  It is really stressful and it feels like I am walking around in a fog.

  • Hi Imorrissey,

Really sorry to hear you're going through this as well, it's horrible isn't it! Hope your results come back soon and it's clear of cancer. Before I saw the Gynaecologist I was sort of ok about things, it had been 4 months since the GP did my urgent referral (I live in Portugal and there's just not enough staff to see people sooner) and I think because my bleeding had improved I naively thought things had improved, so I think it came as a shock when she was so worried.

Take care and if you ever need to talk I'm happy to

  • Hey same sort off thing I have been going through started abnormal bleeding in December wouldn't stop and pain on right side went to doctors and she sent me to get scans done the tva and ultrasound that was the Wednesday got a call from doctor on the Monday to say hospital had rang her to let her know I had an 8.5 mass on right ovary and she wanted me over to get blood test done for the CA 125 and fbc everything can back fine except for high platelet levels which were also high last time I got my blood done 7 months previous they have risen slightly higher this time , she redflagged app for gynae oncologist as she suspected cancer but he has said the chances off it being cancer is low and ordered an mri to be done so had that done on Friday just to wait the results now , I can't understand how they can't tell if it's a cyst or not after the tva and ultrasound scan , sorry for the long post , I hope everything works out for you x

  • Hi Coldol80,

Thanks for your reply, sorry you're going through it too. Fingers crossed your MRI results are good and it's something that can be easily sorted.

I'm hoping my consultant is just being very cautious ordering all these bloods as I had a whole load done last August by my GP before she referred me to Gynae (only one cancer marker tho, ca125) and all came back ok. I think she was just shocked as she asked me to go through how long I'd been bleeding each month since June and some months I'd only had 2 or 3 days of not bleeding.

  • Hello

Your situation sounds pretty similar to me, although I haven't really had abnormal bleeding, but had mri last week for complex ovarian cyst after TVU the week before. The consultant said it didn't scream out cancer to her so I am clinging to that. I haven't slept all night. It's such a horrid time for all of us.

  • Hey thank you all for replying ️yes I am praying we will all get good news it's not a nice thing to go through the sleepless nights and trying to hold it together around my kids who are suspecting something is up as have a lot off trips to doctors and hospitals but I don't want to worry them so better to say nothing  , I think I would off felt better the doc telling me it was a cyst but she didn't she said they don't know what it is (it could be this or that but nothing definite)then received a letter in post 2 days later with the referral to say the family doctor suspects cancer that was after the first 2 scans. I really hope we all get the results we are after can everyone keep us updated on your journeys please , gives some comfort to know they your not going through it alone ️take care everyone xx
