High PSA 30 is it always cancer?

Hi everyone,

Looking for some info. My husband originally went to Doctors due to rectal bleeding and they did tests at same time . His PSA was 30 and they said to take some antibiotics and they would retest his PSA in a month. His lymphocytes are low too . With his recent test it had reduced only slightly to 25.7. He has been referred to urology but don't know how long that will be . My question is can it be prostatis and such a high PSA and not be cancer . He is only 50 with a young family and although trying to be strong , the not knowing is unbearable. i know he is terrified. He had a 'poo' test that has come back normal so that is some good news .     We are now waiting on next steps .

  • Hi, to answer your question, NO, not always.

my nephew recently had a problem urinating. His PSA level was 29 probably due to trauma on his euretha. After taking Tamsulosin it's 2.6 now .... it is for enlarged prostrate that was also hard. This enlargement was restricting his euretha. The drug keeps it supple.

My closest mate has an enlarged prostate too. He is 53

    these cases are BPH...so benign.

    Hope this helps.

Urology will be on the case, so try not to worry too much

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply , it means a lot and has given me some hope  . i think the worry for my husband  is he has not had any issues with urinating or symptoms . it is just the waiting  game that is so hard and google whilst it gives us so much acccess to information we would not  have had a few years ago .... can also create additional worry as we try to self diagnose . Thanks again for your reply x

  • The PSA test (actually there are 3 or 4 types) is not a reliable indicator of PC, but it is a reliable indicator that something is amiss with the prostate or bladder..... this can simply be a urinary tract infection or as I said an enlarged prostate.

there needs to be a national screening programme set up.

I don't know which health authority you are with, but here in Northumberland and Co Durham, appointments and consultant dates are not really an issue. I hope he hears from Urology soon as they will get to the bottom of it.

I know it's easy to say, but try not to dwell on it too much. As Earnest Hemingway once said....' worry solves nothing..'

    remain positive!!

  • Thank you for your reply , we are up in Bonnie Scotland and will try to stay positive.
