Waiting for breast biopsy results- Wait is driving me crazy

Hi everyone,

I found a breast lump 2 weeks ago and have since had my breast clinic appointment 3 days ago in which i had an ultrasound and biopsy. They have said it could be 2-3 weeks for the wait which as the days go by i am finding it harder and harder. Im 27 and honestly thought that they would just say it is a cyst so was a bit thrown when i had to have the biopsy. I will have the results in a letter in which it will either state i have an appointment (which most likely will mean not good news the consultant said) or it will state what the lump is. Im petrified now to receive the letter and would rather just know, whether good or bad, at least then i can just deal with it.

Sorry to ramble it is just hard to speak to family/friends if they havent been through this as i dont want to seem negative all the time

  • That's very true, at least I know what day I'm counting down to!

Something I didnt notice until later was that the letter never actually mentioned that they took a biopsy or that they'd be analysing the results. He refers to everything else that happened (physical examination, took a slide of nipple discharge, ultrasound imaging performed, will discuss at MDT) in the letter but never that they took biopsy sample (it was a different person who did the ultrasound & biopsy from the person who did the physical exam and wrote the letter). Not sure if that's normal or not.
What did the letter to your GP say in regards to biopsy done, does it mention it? Xx

  • That is a bit strange as you think they would mention the biopsy on there? My letter says "you underwent an ultrasound scan and my colleague has taken a biopsy. Once the results of the biopsy come in we will write to you"

My letter is addressed to me thought with the GP copied in. I wonder if they send the GP a separate more detailed one

  • Hmm strange, as my letter was addressed only to the GP. It just seemed like they'd just posted me a copy of what was sent to the GP. Have had no letter that was addressed to/for me.

I'm hoping he's aware a biopsy was taken (like I said it was a different person who did it) or that he hasn't forgotten. The first and only time I met him he wrote down the wrong breast on the form to give to the ultrasound technician (I had to point out it's actually my left) so then he had to cross his diagram out and start again on the left hand side. He laughed it off and said it was because he was old. I laughed too and wasn't a bit concerned but as that's the only time I've met the guy to go off first impressions, now that I've now got a letter omitting the most major part of the whole appointment (at least in my opinion - and my sore boob's opinion lol) then the doubt does start to creep in!

  • Hello Sophie

How are  you feeling today? When did you have your biopsy?

I'm on day 10 now and still nothing!

Apologies if I've asked you this already

    x

  • It's strange how its so different depending on where you are!

Yeah I can imagine you starting to doubt him now if it's not mentioned on there at all. The ultrasound I had done was also done by a different consultant to who examined me. When I finished in the ultrasound/biopsy she gave me a report to take to him.

Fingers crossed he hasn't missed it off! You would think surely he hasn't forgotten something like that when it was such a big part of the appointment!

  • Hi Bear,

I was feeling pretty confident after getting the letter as it reaffirmed likely fibroadenoma and papilloma. However that's what the doctor told me upon initial examination, so I already knew that was his opinion, and expect that as the letter was only written 3 days after the appointment, he must just be reiterating to my GP, the same opinion that he told me on the day, (rather than confirming the results). However it's the fact there's no mention of biopsy or samples of the tissue being taken that I'm feeling a bit confused by. I know I'm probably just being silly and that the doctor will have known about it. Bit there's that tiny part of me that's worried if it was never recorded in the system, then what's happened to the samples? I know that's completely ridiculous and that won't have happened. But just feel a bit doubtful and anxious about it.

No worries. I had mine 18th Feb so on the 12th day now. Still nothing (in terms of information about results etc.) other than this letter that doesn't mention my biopsy at all which was written on 21st Feb. However I have an appointment booked 10th March.

How about you? Any letter or appointment date yet?

    Xx

  • Thanks Paige. That's interesting to know.

I didn't get a report to take back. I was just put back in the waiting room. But then it's funny how every hospital is different!

Partly tempted to ring up and check that biopsy sample is in my records but then I also know I'm being overly paranoid plus don't really want to wait on hold for ages only for  the receptionists to say they're not allowed to tell you anything/access your medical records (that's what the last one said when we were on the phone discussing appointment times).

Ah well who knows! Will just try and sit tight x

  • Ok so it's all ok. Called up on my lunch break, it was actually pretty quick to get through and they were super helpful on the phone. Turns out I was being an idiot as it does say on th lettter that I had an FNA. (Why do they insist on using acronyms!?). It didn't say the word biopsy after it so I didn't twig.

Thanks for putting up with me and needless anxiety over this!

  • Hi Sophie

my letters used to come to me from the hospital from my consultant  but they were worded to my gp it's a copy of the letter they send to your gp that's all lovely .

    love Lara ️
