Waiting for breast biopsy results- Wait is driving me crazy

Hi everyone,

I found a breast lump 2 weeks ago and have since had my breast clinic appointment 3 days ago in which i had an ultrasound and biopsy. They have said it could be 2-3 weeks for the wait which as the days go by i am finding it harder and harder. Im 27 and honestly thought that they would just say it is a cyst so was a bit thrown when i had to have the biopsy. I will have the results in a letter in which it will either state i have an appointment (which most likely will mean not good news the consultant said) or it will state what the lump is. Im petrified now to receive the letter and would rather just know, whether good or bad, at least then i can just deal with it.

Sorry to ramble it is just hard to speak to family/friends if they havent been through this as i dont want to seem negative all the time

  • Told me upto 3 weeks torture

  • Thank you! It does feel like ages now.  I think I'm probably just as impatient now as I was at the beginning. I think you probably get more used to feeling like this, but it's still unbearable having to wait. I go through periods of being really good at not thinking about and feeling really positive and then other times where it drives me crazy!

I think my clinic must have a policy where they always book an appointment. So if I still don't get a letter by the time my appointment comes around I'll try not to worry.  They scheduled mine 2 days (one of which was a Sunday) after my biopsy so can't possibly have had the results back already surely (and if they did then scheduling my appointment 3 weeks later must surely mean good news).
Apparently even if it's benign they may still have to treat it with surgery depending on what it is so would still need to meet with me in person to discuss potential treatment options etc.

Fingers crossed for us! Be sure to let us know how you get on with yours

  • Yeah I totally get what you mean! I thought I would feel better as the days go by but I feel exactly the same but know what to expect each day as it literally is just a waiting game!

Yeah I don't think they would be able to get the results back after 2 days? Maybe they could but I would have thought it would be at least 1 week. I think I would rather have an appointment to be told either way as I'm going to be so nervous to open my letter!

And yes definitely let me know! I'm so shocked all of this has happened I can't quite believe it sometimes

  • I think so as well. Yes true, will be scary either way! I am glad they're still willing to want to see me again after results, even if it's benign, by scheduling this apppintment for me as it indicates to me that they're still prioritising patient care by giving me a chance to discuss the results and what they mean in person.

Yes is all a bit surreal. I just wonder how long I've had it for.
Is nipple discharge is common in fibroidadenomas? Was having it for about a week before and up til my biopsy but none since. Though my nipple is still a bit different from the other one still

  • Yeah I think it good that they will see you, gives you chance to ask any questions aswell!

I'm not sure on the discharge sorry! I haven't experienced any of that. My lump is very deep in and is quite hard to feel although I did really think they would just say it is a cyst.

Another day over with so one day closer to finding out

  • Hello

I need to stop reading things online! I read that the longer it takes to get biopsy results its not a good sign.  But then I also read something about the quicker you hear from them isen't good either.

I don't know what to believe anymore ladies.

I'm going to bed early to end the day

    Sorry bad anxiety

    x

  • It's such an anxious waiting time isn't it. Hoping an early night and lots of rest has got you you feeling better in the morning hun xx

Isnt it crazy how much conflicting advice you read online! Looking down the list of all the results that come up from a single google search, and they're even contradicting each other even in just the website headlines! Among much contradictory information about many different signs and symptoms, I've read nipple discharge can be a sign of fibroadenoma but that it also can't. That clear discharge can be either a good sign or an sign of cancer.

in terms of length of time it takes for them to get to you, I guess it's almost impossible for us to draw a conclusion as each clinic will be completely different depending on how many samples they've got to process, if there's a backlog etc. So hard for us to know. Just have to ensure this endless waiting game and meet it when it comes x

  • Hello Lovely ladies

I've jsut seen my GP as my anxiety is off the scale! She told me it's mininum 2 weeks wait for results what ever the result.  Apparently depends on how many samples labs get and how much work they need to do for testing.

    x

  • That is reassuring to hear thank you Bear! X

Must also keep in mind that 80-90% (again conflicting figures depending on where you look) of samples biopsied are completely benign.

And I also keep trying to remind myself that I'd rather have 2 weeks of worrying to then have the relief of knowing for definite it's nothing afterwards, than be told it's nothing at the very first appointment and then worry in the back of mind how they can know for definite if they never took a biopsy to check!
