MRI guided breast biopsy

My niece who is only 22, is waiting for a MRI guided biopsy, she has been waiting since December despite being on the fast track list.  The lump which is 8mm and on her chest wall, was spotted on a CT scan in October for something else.  She was referred to a hospital in Leeds for this as the hospital in Sheffield where she lives doesn't have a machine, but their machine is broken & has been for sometime, which is unbelievable.  She gets a weekly call to update her, they said they would look for another area, that was in January! I am going to start advocating for her now as I feel she isn't being dealt with properly. You can imagine what this is doing to her mental health. Can anyone offer any advice? Anyone know where there are any other machines that we could enquire about? Thank you.

  • Hi Gwen and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear how long your niece has been waiting for her MRI guided biopsy despite being fast tracked. I can't begin to imagine the impact this must be having on her but I'm sure she will be taking a lot of comfort from knowing her auntie has her back and is going to do all she can to help.

Unfortunately I can't offer any help or guidance on where other machines may be based but maybe when your niece is due her next phone call, you could ask if she is happy for you to be there and if she has given you her permission, you can speak with them directly and find out what progress has been made with finding another location.

If you are not satisfied with the response, you and your niece could get in touch with PALS (Patient Advice and Liasion Service) who can try and resolve the issue for you. You can find out more about them just here.

Hopefully some of our members who have found themselves in a similar situation will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our nurses about this, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Best wishes to you both,
