Been told I have cancer before biopsy results are in

Hi

So I went to my first breast clinic appointment yesterday and they seemed pretty certain that it's cancer but couldn't say for definite until the biopsy results come in, they said my arm pits was fine but will probably want to do a MRI once the results are in I don't really know what for.  Really worried right now and don't really know what to think.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that Amara. I can completely understand why you must be feeling really worried! That's must've been a really frightening experience.

Did they say why they were fairly certain it was cancer before the results have come back to confirm either way  - do you know if it the way the mass appeared on the ultrasound?

Hoping its a positive outcome for you when the biopsy results do come back - when are they due?

    Xx

  • Hiya thanx for your reply I really appreciate it and to be honest I don't know they seemed to know as soon as I had the first ultrasound then they sent me for a mammogram which apparently they don't usually do for women under 40 I think they said then they sent me back to the ultrasound to have the biopsy taken it wasn't until I spoke to the consultant she said there are some changes there but couldn't say for certain until the results come in.

Im due to go back in 2 weeks for my results and to discuss treatment is what got said to be honest I think I was in shock didn't take it all in as the GP I had seen up to that point didn't seem that concerned

  • Hi amara

mum sorry to find you here

the same happened to me in July 22 I was told suspicions and my biopsy confirmed it 7 days later .

but just to tell you I'm back to my normal life now like it never happened Lippy on out the door that's always been the way I coped last year

I'm here if you need a chat big hugs love Lara ️

  • Hi Ammara,

Sorry to hear this. I had the same thing yesterday and the consultant then told me he was 80% sure I had cancer because the ultrasound showed calcification and there's a lump in my armpit. I had mastitis first ( I'm 36 with no children) and the lump from there didnt clear up. So he thinks there's  a 20% could be an infection - but I don't fit the criteria because I haven't breastfed/ don't smoke/don't drink. I spoke with a nurse today and she said they can't be certain until biopsy results are back.  Just hoping and praying our biopsy comes back clear.

  • Thankyou so much for your reply Lara it's good to hear that you have made it through it, can I ask what you had to have done treatment wise if you don't mind I've got to wait until the 8th of March I think the waiting is the worst, trying to get on with normal life but am mentally exhausted at the minute xx

  • The fact that they mentioned that they will be discussing treatment with you prior to any results coming back does sound worrying.

Of course it may be that it is routine to discuss treatment with every patient, regardless of whether their tumour turns out to be malignant or benign - around 90% of lumps that you can feel are benign but many are still removed as a routine treatment to address them. What did the lump feel like? (you've not actually mentioned one but I'm assuming that's why you had the appointment?).

But obviously it's impossible to say until the biopsy comes back, which means long enduring 2 week wait for you.

It does at least sound like you're in safe hands, and that they're  taking every possible precaution (mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy etc.). And if it does turn out the be anything sinister that it's hopefully been caught early on. How long between discovering the lump and the appointment itself?

  • Hi I'm so sorry to hear your going through the same thing it's a difficult time I really hope you have a positive outcome from it all xx

  • Not long at all I booked in to see the GP straight away as soon as I found the lump but to be honest I don't check my breasts as often as I should so worried it's been there a while it's quite a big ball, hard and painless the GP then put an urgent referral in to the breast clinic which is the appointment I attended yesterday.

Yes I suppose you could be right any sort of treatment to remove it doesn't necessarily point towards cancer but they sounded pretty certain that it was just couldn't say for definite until the results come back.

  • Sorry to hear that they have said this before results are back. Normally they don't confirm or deny anything till biopsy done. I'm awaiting results of my biopsies which I get on Monday and the consultant wouldn't give me clue either way until they see results and have a MDT meeting to discuss the findings. Then I will be given results on Monday afternoon and discuss a treatment plan.

  • Hiya so they told you also that they would be discussing treatment even though they're not certain what it is.

At the ultrasound they said there are some changes in the cells and when I asked the consultant she said it does look like it yes but couldn't say for certain until the results come back she did also say that no matter what it is we will get it sorted so fingers crossed.

I hope your biopsy results come back with a positive outcome
