Urgent appointment after ultrasound

Hi,

i visted my dr 5 weeks ago with lumps in my neck, constantly tired (noticed them back in november thought it was down to infection). I had bloods done & a urgent referral for an ultrasound.

my bloods came back low folate. I had the scan 2 weeks later on the 3rd feb. The dr at my GP said they will get the results and contact me. I had a call direct from the hospital on friday saying the consultant had requested an urgent app with me on the 24th feb. I asked wgat it was for and they said all they could tell me was its to discuss the ultrasound.

i phoned my gp and asked if they knew anything to be told that the gp has not yet recieved anything information in regards to the results of the ultrasound.

i am worrying as its direct with the hospital, if everything was ok surely they would send this to my GP to have a quick GP appointment to say everything is ok?

  • I wouldn't assume anything yet. An ultrasound often can't make a diagnosis. I know for thyroid cancer (not sure if the lumps on your neck are likely to be on your thyroid or lymph nodes or what), the majority of nodules have to be biopsied, though most are benign. They usually do an ultrasound first and that helps to categorise the risk, but it is only a small number where the risk is so low that there is no need for a biopsy.

It is possible the ultrasound has picked up something concerning, but it is also possible that it can't tell much beyond the fact that yes, there are lumps there, now we need to find out what is causing them.

  • Thank you for your reply! I am trying to remain positive in regards to things, I think your mind just goes into panic and the anxiety having to wait inbetween these appointments
