More than a bit scared - 3 lumps, tingling and itchiness

Hi. I'm sitting here fretting and decided not to do so alone. Last April after finding a lump near my throat, sore throat and tinnitus I was referred for an MRI by an ERT specialist. The radiographer said I had a couple of 'nodes' whatever that meant. The specialist was looking for nasopharyngeal cancer and gave me the all clear. Likely TMJ disorder.

So far so good, kind of.

Around August I felt a hard lump over the left jaw joint. I put it down to a cyst or related to TMJ. By December I had suffered a long time with tinnitus, itchy skin, heat rashes, ear fullness on left, bouts of fatigue, dry eyes and mouth. Add to neck discomfort on left that i associated with TMJ probs.

Dr referred me to rheumatology for likely Sjogrens. TMJ thought to be from stress. No kidding. Dr thinks I've had sjogrens for a while just that it's kicked in harder now I'm in my 50s.

January I suffer extreme fatigue for two weeks and pains into both hands in the fingers. Tingling skin on left shin, on and off on hands. My physio also found an irregular shaped mass on back left of neck. I thought it was a muscle knot but it moves under pressure. It's about two to three cm. I think it's been there a few months. I've found a hard 1 to 2 cm lump further round neck also.

I haven't got ordinary night sweats. We usually share a bottle of wine on a Friday and Saturday. Whenever i have alcohol now  which isnt often, I have woke sweating. That doesn't normally occur. It's new.

I wake with a dry mouth most nights. New.

Numb and tingling fingers are new.

Itchy skin par for the course since menopause but seems worse.

Bloods are normal. WBC and RBC normal. Lymphocyte levels normal.

My Dr has referred my for head MRI for tinnitus to make sure there's nothing sinister there as its one ear only.

But also an ultrasound neck to check the lumps. They are too small to be visible but have been hard and rubbery for a fair period of time. So not going down at all.

I don't want to wind myself up with worry but the lumps, dry mouth, tingling and numb fingers, recurrent fatigue arent normal. Though recently i have been upping my fitness as the fatigue isnt there currently.

My sister died very quickly from cancer as did my Dad. So I'm doing a massive amount of fretting.

So I find myself waiting for head MRI and neck ultrasound. I'm worried this is the start of lymphoma. I have no experience of any of this. I don't even know if the Dr has asked for the correct tests. Why not MRI head and neck? Why not ultrasound and biopsy as its gold standard?

  • Hello AlexaYorksLass

I'm sorry to hear that you've had ongoing health problems now for quite some time without a proper diagnosis. It's understandable that you're worried about what may be the cause of your symptoms but it sounds like your GP is trying to get to the bottom of this which is good to hear.

You mention that you had been referred regarding a possible Sjorgen's diagnosis. Have you had that appointment with the specialist yet?

It can be really difficult whilst waiting for tests and diagnosis and it's natural that you may be feeling frustrated by things. Sometimes it can help to chat things through with someone and as you're worried that your symptoms may possibly be lymphoma I wondered if you might like to talk with one of our nurses. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

In the meantime, I hope that you don't have to wait too long for the MRI and ultrasound and that those scan results bring you closer to a proper diagnosis.

    Best wishes,
