How do I stay calm after being recalled?

I've just been recalled for screening after having my routine mammogram. I'm 62 and haven't noticed any problems. I know it could be nothing, but obviously I'm scared. I don't go back for two weeks and don't know how I can switch my mind off from worrying about it. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep calm while I'm waiting.

  • Julien

I had bC last year , my mum had a callback last month I cried for 2 weeks but all came back clear for her I'm sure you will be ok good luck love Lara ️

  • Thanks. So glad to hear it was ok for her. It's a scary wait.

  • Hi Julie, sorry to hear you've been recalled, but it may just be routine to rule out anything suspicious. I won't say not to worry, because I was in your shoes last summer and I did worry (I was 63 at the time). It helped that we already had a family holiday booked, so that was great distraction for a week. The rest of the time, I tried to keep busy, sang songs that gave me strength and hope, went for walks outdoors, etc. I also prayed, but you could also try mindfulness or meditation, and listening to calming or happy music. I really hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about, but if you're fearing the worst, just remember that treatments are so advanced these days and survival rates are very high. I'm well on the way to a cure. Sending lots of good wishes your way. If you need a listening ear, the CR and Macmillan helplines are really good, and of course, we're all here to offer support. xx

  • Hi. Thanks so much for that. Glad to hear you are doing well. I keep reminding myself that worrying won't make a difference to the results so I might as well keep my head up and get on with things. I know I'll have wobbles but that's perfectly normal. We've got a busy couple of weeks ahead so that will keep me occupied.

  • Hello! A recall doesn't always mean that there is something suspicious. I had a recall and I didn't think I had anything going on because I had an out of schedule mammogram a year before for a lump that turned out to be nothing. My recall was because they couldn't see properly because of dense breast tissue. So hopefully yours will turn out nothing either

  • Thanks. That's what I'm hoping. Glad yours was ok. Still hard not to worry though!

  • It is hard not to worry but try and stay positive. I've been recalled twice out of 3 routine mammograms now. The first time I went to the breast clinic I had another mammogram, ultrasound and biposies taken. While my husband was in the waiting room waiting for me, there was a steady stream of women arrive, have the mammogram and be told no problems, they could go. I was the only one that morning that went from room to room and saw the consultant for a chat. In the end when my results came through, it was calcifications and nothing sinister. The next recall I obviously thought they must have got it wrong and was expecting the worst, only to have the ultrasound first for them to confirm the lump was a cyst, drained there and then and I was in the clinic about 10 minutes in total. Try and keep yourself busy , you might have nothing to worry about. I wish you all the best and hope for a good outcome

  • Thanks so much for your reply. Must've been hard keep being called back. Been in a busy organising mood today which is keeping me busy. Keep reminding myself that I can freak out or stay calm, but either way the outcome will be the same so I might as well stay calm!
Glad everything went ok for you.
