2 ww pathway after smear test

Hi, I went for my smear test yesterday and the nurse spotted a long "skin tag" near the cervix during the examination and called the doctor to have a look for a second opinion. The doctor then told me she would need to refer me on the 2ww pathway as the polyp shape looks a bit irregular and the cervix was a bit red too. I logged in to my NHS account last name and I saw the referral was made under suspected gyneacological cancer.

I am really freaked out. Could the nurse or doctor seen something that  can could indicate cancer?

  • Hi

a 2 week pathway is - generally - in place if a medical practitioner is concerned about a potential cancer. Yes.

However, it is impossible for the doctor that looked to know for sure that it is cancerous just by looking at you. There's every possibility (and probability) that it isn't cancer, but the 2 week pathway is in place to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible.

remember - 'suspected cancer' is VERY different to 'confirmed cancer', and there is a long way to go to get to that point.

    all the best

  • Hi, I would just like to say that I was referred under 2ww when my nurse during a routine smear found a large polyp. A doctor cane to have a look and as I had discharge / abnormal bleeding she said would be best to refer under 2ww eventhough vast majority are benign and does not think it's cancer. She said she wanted me to stop having symptoms and have peace of mind quickly. She said normal referral takes months. My referral was also under oncology.

So it might just be they want you to be seen quickly, that's why they do 2ww. My polyp did turn out be a really big one but benign. Xxx

  • Just want to add that my smear test came back clear 3 years ago.

So just hoping now even worse case scenario, the cells are just abnormal and not cancerous yet.

  • Went for the appt last week. Had an ultrasound done. They found 2 polyps ( one cervical and one endometrial) and they booked me in to have them removed next week through a hyteroscopy. I was given the option to have it done without anesthetic or under GA. They said if I find it too painful during the procedure, they will stop and booked in me for GA.

wondering if anyone has any experience of not having it done under GA?
Meanwhile I my smear test result came back normal, so that's a relief.
