Really Scared After Biopsy

Hey I'm a 26 year old male. Today I went for an ultrasound on my neck and right underarm for swollen lymph nodes which have been present for 5 years, the lady who done my neck said their fine but I had a doctor scan my lymph node under my arm and asked do I want a biopsy which I agreed too at this time I was really worried and bombarded him with questions one of his replies was he's 90% convinced it's not lymphoma but wanted to do the biopsy so he knows 100%. I'll also say I have really bad acne on my back, chest and shoulders which a lot of GPs have said is the cause for the swelling in the nodes any input would be massively appreciated guys thanks I'm a worrying mess at the moment

  • Just a word of advice to try and put you at ease - if the lumps have been present for 5 years, haven't got any worse then it's almost certainly not gonna be lymphoma.

to be crass - you wouldn't be alive 5 years later if those lumps were lymphoma.

relax, listen to the professionals - and stay away from Dr.Google!

  • Everybody keeps saying the same thing and thank you for the reply but what is confusing me is that the doctor who done the biopsy today said he's 90 percent convinced it isn't a form of lymphoma but still done a biopsy

  • There's no harm in a biopsy though. It will just put your mind at ease as to what it is (and more importantly what it isn't!)

if everyone keeps saying the same thing bud then it's time to take a deep breath and start listening that's all. Everyone you've spoken to has told you there's nothing to worry about,

out of interest - have these lumps got any bigger in the 5 years you've had them?

  • Apologies I'm just really anxious after 5 years of not  knowing what it actually is and no they haven't got bigger if anything they can go smaller depending how bad my acne is they change in size but not larger only smaller. So for the doctor saying he's more or less convinced it's benign is he aloud to say that as in a duty of care prospective apologies if that don't make much sense

  • Hi Caldd,

Doctors tend to tell it as they see it these days. The doctor you saw is quite within his Duty of Care, because even though he was 90% sure, he wanted to make sure that he could be100% confident, hence the biopsy.

Lymph nodes can swell due to even a minor infection, so all of these doctors that you've seen about your acne could well be right. Sometimes these nodes can settle down, but at others, they never do, yet never become cancerous. However, you have done the right thing by getting them checked out.

Have you been told when you will get your results? The wait for results is always an anxious time. Try to find something to occupy your time in the interim.

I hope that all turns out well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine
