Positive FIT test - panicking

Hi,

Hoping to get an insight. I went to the doctor after 3/4 months of IBS symptoms and had the usual stool & blood tests done. Stool tests all normal including the calprotectin. Blood tests all normal except the ESR was 24 which I was told was borderline and no need to worry

I realised after googling that my doctors hadn't done a FIT test (no visible blood in my poo) so I had one done privately for reassurance. Of course, I was called by a nurse to tell me that my result was abnormal and was 242.

I am awaiting a colonoscopy now but I am terrified. I have 2 young children and family who are extremely useless. If something happens to me, I don't know what will happen to them if someone was to happen to my husband too

I am really hoping that having normal faecal calprotectin levels will mean it's not the c word, but am very much struggling in the buildup to the colonoscopy. I have never felt such utter despair and worry

  • Hello BellaBonita

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some ongoing health concerns and that your FIT test came back with some raised results. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious ahead of your colonoscopy.

Many people get worried while waiting for tests and results and it's natural that your mind may wander to the worst-case scenario but it's important to remember that there could be reasons other than cancer that you have a raised FIT result.

At times like this it can help to talk through your concerns with someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can ahead of your appointment. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope you have some news soon. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
