Hi
I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice on a situation my husband is going through as my mind keeps running through lots of possibilities and would be grateful for advice/information from anyone who has been through similar.
He hadn't told me but it turns out my husband has been having constant pain/discomfort in his abdomen for months. He got blood tests done and then the gp did an examination and was concerned when my husband experienced more pain when the doctor was pressing on his liver. The doctor said his liver levels (I'm not entirely sure what that means!) were slightly raised and coupled with the pain he was going ro refer him for an ultrasound to check his liver/gallbladder and mentioned gallstones as a possibility. The doctor didn't give a number for his liver levels at that appointment but said my husband would need to get his bloods repeated in two weeks.
My husband got his bloods taken again last week then on Tuesday he got a text from the doctor saying his liver levels had raised more from 59 to 74 and they would discuss it after the ultrasound. He had the ultrasound today (we decided to take the hit and pay for a private scan as the waiting time in our area on the NHS at the moment is weeks, even for urgent referrals). The person at the scan only referred to the gallbladder and said it looked good, no sign of gallstones. No mention was made of the liver and my husband said it was all over so quickly and the person left the room before he had a chance to think about what was being said and ask questions. They said they would get their report to the doctor as soon as they could, I think they originally said it would be within two working days.
After giving it some thought my husband phoned the gp surgery and asked the receptionist if she could tell him what the doctor had put on the referral letter to the private clinic and it turns out they had only mentioned checking the gallbladder, no mention of the liver! This is not what the doctor said he would be referring him for and specifically said the liver and gallbladder would need to be checked especially coupled with the rising liver levels.
I'm not sure if anyone will be able to answer this but does anyone know if it's likely they will have checked the liver while checking the gallbladder even if the liver wasn't specifically mentioned in the referral (which it should have been)? Are the gallbladder and liver so connected that it would be difficult to look at one without the other? Also if anyone was referred for a scan in case it was gallstones but it turned out to be the liver did they mention this at the scan to you or did you only find out when you got the results from the doctor? If they had spotted something wrong with the liver do you think they would have mentioned it to him today or left it to the gp to tell him when they send him their report?
Also can anyone offer any advice about what having a liver level of 74 means and the fact that it's risen from 59 in the last three weeks?
I'm trying not to let my mind wander to worst case scenarios but I have a friend who went through something similar and jt ended up being cancer. I don't want to ask them about it though as they've got enough to deal with right now without having to worry about my husband.
In case it's relevant, my husband is in his 30s and active and a healthy weight, non-smoker and only occasional drinker and never to excess.
Thanks in advance for any advice/info anyone can give me. I'm trying to avoid googling too much and also not wanting to speak to my husband about it too much as would do him no good to know the worries that I have about it all.
